The property was lovely, but unfortunately no one was there to greet us and we also did not have the gate number. This caused a lot of stress as we could not gain access. Thankfully a neighbor was in and was able to get in touch with someone.
I have been to the establishment in April 2018 and used different accommodation. Due to being so fully booked we used the cottages at the bottom of the dam being the Franklin room. William was very hospitable and tried his best to deal with our issues. However, I believe a more thorough checklist needs to be done before booking in guests.
1) 1 spoon in a chalet for 4 people.
2) 2 tablespoons in a chalet for 4 people.
3) Oven is gas driven - no control of temperature - 1 setting - too low to cook.
4) NO oven proof dishes or pans to use in oven. Only the oven grid.
5) Gas bottle had to be replaced - could have been checked prior to our check in.
6) Fridge does not work. Had to move ice into the fridge to keep stock fresh.
7) Braai grill was not available - had to reclaim from chalet next door.
8) Bedroom roof has leak marks on ceiling - very unappealing to look at.
Other than that we had a lovely stay.
We were suppose to stay for 4 nights but checked out after 1 night as the place was not at all what we saw on the website. These were the problems:
- No one at reception when we arrived (we hooted and drove down to the gate and tried to phone but there was no cellphone signal) eventually we went back and stayed on the hooter untill someone came to reception
- when we got to the room the beds weren’t made and they said they were busy washing the linen
- we left our luggage there and by 15:00 we left and there were still no bedding
- the place advertized on the app had a thatch-roof and a pool right outside the cottage but ours had no swimming pool in sight and had a corrugated roof (looked nothing like the pictures on the website.
The containers with the soap and shampoo was dirty.
-the gravel road was terrible
Overall this place was not up to standard to say the least!!
Great to be out in the bush to get away. It was actually a relief not to have cell phone signal and this meant that the Teenagers focused on the family for a change and interacted meaningfully. The place needs a bit of Capex for sure, but the beds were comfortable and the sheets a quality linen. The crockery was the dirtiest I had ever seen when we got there (like it hadn't been washed but put straight back into the cupboard) but the manager, William, was very friendly and tried his best to remedy. Overall for the price it was good value and we enjoyed ourselves. The road going in was a little tricky so don't think you are taking your Ferrari.
If you love nature, birds and quietness! Pack your back and visit Birdsong! We had fabulous hikes in the morning for more than a hour! Birdsong was quite a surprise for me! We enjoyed it so much! Value for money!
Séjour de 3 nuits. Un vrai repos dans la campagne. Quel calme! Petit chemin de terre et de pierres de 2, 5 kms.
Le chalet B est bien équipé et confortable. Par contre le chalet est sur deux étages. Donc quelques marches. Petite piscine bien agreable.
Je recommande à ceux qui aiment le calme.
Stayed 3 nights in the sunbird cottage with my wife and toddler son. The area is peaceful, serene, quiet and ideal just to winddown and enjoy. The trail game walk was one of my highlights, such a lovely environment. The facilities, self-catering is adequate. We had a braii area and a private jacuzzi, awesome. The gardens at the place are well maintained and beautiful. The host William is such a wonderful guy, exceptional service he gives. The place is close to Modimole town and you can do all your shopping there. Overall, wonderful experience.
Wonderful stay! Such friendly staff, and lovely rooms

Birdsong Cottages - Sunbird
Lovely venue in the countryside. Vintage feel to everything which was unique. Lovely staff that are very helpful when needed. Only thing that could use some improvement is the maintenance. We had a light without a plug on it, kitchen unit could definitely be replaced. It has collapsed on one side and the funny stove unit has fridges under it that dont work, it is also a little understocked on the kitchen crockery/cutlery etc, as it is a self catering unit. We were a bit disappointed that we were told there was no space for our friends to join us and we were the only people at the venue the entire weekend. However I would go back, its quiet and their is hardly any signal which suited us perfectly.
Best place on earth. Nothing better in the whole wide world. Is this better? My honest review was not accepted so here is the one that might be allowed.
Staff was nice but the building needs a lot of care. Bathroom was uncomfortably dark and "patched up". We had to find our own table and chairs for outside. The kettle braai was filthy. Bed room light not working. We took a bulb from the other bed room. Bedroom is so dark that you need a flashlight to look in the cupboard. Kitchen utensils were OK but I wish they had warned us that rats or shrews would come to eat our dry packed food. We had to throw away about Zar 250 worth of food. Most of it still new / sealed. The kitchen tabs are put in such a dumb way that you can't even rinse a class under them. Gardens, ponds and fountains are seriously neglected. Bed linen had holes in it and the fitted sheets were not fitted, the elastic was long gone. The walks on the property could be quite nice if more attention was paid to the surroundings.
What a beautiful place in the middle of no-where. We even saw a lot of animals walking around the premises. We stayed in the Owl's cottage A, which was great. The bathroom a little worn. Our friends stayed in Owl's cottage B, which I loved. A great treat when travelling a bigger group (of 6), that we could hang out on the terrace f.ex
The staff kindly made a braai for us in the evening and the breakfast is a wonderful surprise. Served in THE most beautiful space ever. I could sit there all day - several days in a row :)
