Enjoying lovely views over Tokyo Bay and a prime location close to the capital city of Japan, Makuhari offers a good base for holidaymakers and business travellers. It is also home to the finest convention and meeting halls in the country. Shopping, beaches, taking in a premium league baseball match and the Inage swimming pool complex are other attractions Makuhari features.

Makuhari Beach is a long stretch of golden sands alongside Makuharikaihin Park. On warm days in summer, the beach and the waters of Tokyo Bay are a major draw for tourists. Makuhari Messe is at the back of the park and is a complex of three big buildings suitable for all kinds of business and educational events.

Inage is a little east along the coast from Makuhari and offers family entertainment from July to September. A series of swimming pools are equipped with slides, a wave machine and sunbathing patios. In the opposite direction, Urayasu is only 20kms away and is the location of the Disneysea and Disneyland theme parks.

QVC Marine Field is a 30,000-seat stadium at Makuharikaihin Park. It is the home ground of Pacific League baseball team Chiba Marines and the venue for the annual Summer Sonic Festival rock-music festival. It also hosts international stars on tour and everybody from Madonna to Lady Gaga has played here.

Although the choice of restaurants and nightlife venues in Makuhari is not as large as in central Chiba, it has a fair choice. The Grand Mall section of the Aeon Mall has more than 20 restaurants in one dining zone. In addition to eateries serving Japanese dishes like tempura, sushi and ramen noodles, Makuhari has international options. The Outback is themed on an Australian pub and serves huge steaks, seafood specials, cocktails and beers. There is also an Irish bar and some traditional Japanese izakaya bars.

The Aeon Mall in Makuhari is modern and houses a wonderful collection of shops. It is split into four parts. The Active sector sells sports gear and electronic gadgets and features facilities such as tennis courts and a rock-climbing venue to try them out. Sky Park is an exciting children’s play park in the family section. Retailers with outlets at Aeon include Nike, Laura Ashley and Toys’R’Us.
