Plaza Mayor

Main Square which includes a square or plaza and a monument
Relax with the locals in the heart of Coroico, where you can appreciate artwork, dine outdoors or simply rest in the shade beneath the trees.

The beating heart of Coroico is its Main Square. Wander beneath the tall, leafy trees or take a seat and meet some of the locals who congregate in the plaza. Enjoy a hearty Bolivian meal in the open air and step into a cool church in the buildings the surround the square.

Come to Coroico’s Main Square on a Saturday or Sunday to shop at the town’s weekly market. On other days of the week, browse handicrafts and locally made jewelry in a market on the south side of the plaza. Take your time and adjust to the gentler pace of life that makes Coroico so appealing.

Choose one of the restaurants on the edge of the square for dinner in an atmospheric setting. An array of restaurants provides diverse options. Sip a drink in a German beer hall, feast on Italian cuisine from a pizzeria or find a Bolivian restaurant to eat like the locals. Stay long into the evening to experience Coroico’s nightlife at the bars and discotheques.

Look in the center of the square to find a charming fountain. The bird on top of the water feature is a tunqui, the symbol of the town.

At the northern side of the plaza, find the Cathedral of Peter and Paul. Step into the attractive yellow building to join in a service. Lucky visitors may even witness a wedding taking place here.

Coroico is a gateway to the surrounding mountains, which have plenty of hiking and biking routes for all levels. Trek into the woods for birdwatching or bravely attempt to bike along the famously dangerous “Road of Death.” Hike out to El Vagante for a day to reach natural stone swimming pools with mountainous views.

Walk to the Main Square of Coroico from your accommodations. Visit the square on Bolivian Independence Day in August or during the town’s festival in October to see the square come to life with partying and parades.
