One of Sweden's oldest cities, the charming university town of Lund offers a unique blend of old and new.
Lund has the biggest university in Sweden and a third of the town's residents are students, which is clearly felt in the jovial atmosphere. This is one of the reasons there is always something to do on your visit to Lund. History also leaves an ever present mark on the town whose medieval origins can be seen on the layout of the historical centre.
Lund was founded around 990 AD and is situated in southern Sweden, 20 km (12 miles) from Malmo and the Oresund Bridge which links the region to the rest of Europe. During the 12th and 13th centuries Lund was the seat of the archbishop, and there are several churches in the town. An absolute must for all tourists is Lund Cathedral. This is the most visited church in Sweden, and every June it hosts the official celebration of Sweden's National Day.
Don't miss the centrally located open air museum Kulturen, which consists of thirty historical buildings containing exhibitions about life in Sweden through history. Take a stroll through one of the parks Lundagard or Stadsparken, or visit the Botanical Garden with its over 7,000 native and exotic plant species. Visit the university run Vattenhallen Science Centre and learn more about science and technology through scientific experiments and other hands on activities. Any food lover will enjoy the market hall with its array of food stalls and restaurants.
In the vicinity of Lund there are 28 nature reserves and a large network of easily accessible hiking routes. Find a good selection of them in the recreational area Skrylle, 12 km (7.5 miles) from Lund, where you get by bus, car or bike.
Get to Lund by flying to Malmo and continuing your journey by car, train or bus. The town has a good public transport network, but the most popular way to get around here is by bike. The city has a good and cheap cycle hire scheme with 250 bikes across seventeen terminals.
