Kootenay Gallery

Kootenay Gallery showing heritage elements and interior views
Stop in at this stylish gallery to see the work of talented local and national artists. Outdoors in the butterfly garden you can see sculptures alongside the work of nature.

Spend an afternoon in the Kootenay Gallery of Art, History and Science and you may find yourself admiring colorful ceramics, perusing landscape art or even listening to a concert by local musicians. Join in a workshop in pottery or life drawing or attend a lecture about the art on display. Be sure to spend some time exploring the colorful gardens. Here you will find interesting sculptures, colorful blooms and several species of butterfly.

You won’t miss the Kootenay Gallery’s vibrant exterior. It is set among landscaped gardens with the walls painted with bright murals of hibiscus flowers. The building dates back to the 1970s, when a number of rural galleries were established throughout Canada. Exhibitions are constantly changing so it’s unlikely two visits here will be the same.

Step inside the gallery and you may find an exhibition of photography by local artists, ceramics from a nationally renowned potter or a series of paintings with a local theme. The bright white walls of the purpose-built space make for the perfect place to showcase the work. There are two separate galleries, so you will always find a variety of art on display.

You may even catch a concert, a lecture or a hands-on workshop here. The space lends itself perfectly to staging small local events so be sure to ask what coincides with your visit. Join in a painting class or learn to sculpt clay.

Stroll around the Xeriscape Sculpture gardens to view a range of colorful and interesting sculptures. During summer months the gardens are also filled with bright butterflies flitting between the blooms.

Be sure to visit the gift shop before you leave. This is a treasure trove of artwork. Buy a couple of locally made souvenirs and search for books detailing previous exhibits.

The Kootenay Gallery is located on Heritage Way just opposite the West Kootenay Regional Airport. There is a small charge for entry. Classes or events may cost extra. The gallery is closed on Mondays.
