Spend several hours at an attractive urban park where you can ride on a train, pet some animals, climb up a tower and go swimming.

Killesberg Park is a flower-filled recreational space with gardens, terraces, lakes, children’s playgrounds and large grassy areas. Enjoy a peaceful morning or afternoon in this 123-acre (50-hectare) expanse.

Walk along paths bordered by colourful flowerbeds. Visit the small animal enclosure to see donkeys, llamas, goats and pigs. Take the children to the play areas and enjoy some refreshments in one of the cafés. Alternatively, bring your own food and roll out a rug on the grass for a picnic.

Climb to the top of the 130-foot (40-metre) high observation tower for views of the park and the city. The structure stands at the highest point of Killesberg and features two spiral staircases that connect four platforms at different heights.

From the end of April until the middle of September you can go swimming in the large open-air swimming pool. The facilities include sunbathing areas and a water slide for children. There is an admission charge with reduced prices for children.

During the summer, take a ride around the park on the miniature railway system. Carriages are pulled by either steam or diesel locomotives.

Killesberg Park hosts a number of cultural events throughout the year. Visit in July for the Lichterfest Stuttgart, a festival of lights. The park is decorated with hundreds of lanterns and at night there is a firework display accompanied by live music. If you are in Stuttgart in July and August book a ticket for the summer concert series. There are operas and shows by famous artists and tribute bands.

Killesberg Park is part of the “Green U,” a 5-mile (8-kilometre) u-shaped region of parks situated around the city centre. Reach Killesberg Park by bus or taxi. If you drive you can park in nearby streets where some of the spaces are free.
