Nice small hotel but...

Mostly nice but some serious glitches: 1) it turned out almost impossible to get back in at 11pm after a dinner out. No bell, no-one answered the phone. Finally an area security vehicle turned up and was able to honk his horn to attract attention so the big iron gate finally opened, after 10-15min, 2) aircon unit mounted on wall opposite bed rather than over, so blowing straight to your face, forcing us to turn it off at night, 3) far too thick duvet (as most hotels in hot SA!) 4) room charge 30% higher than booked rate appeared on our bill although it was prepaid through hotels.com. 5) Airport transfer booked with receptionist day before departure never showed up, so only 20min later we were forced to book an Uber ourselves, causing stress to get to the airport in time.

Very nice and attentive staff. Room was lovely before you even account for the view! Comfy bed and nice amenities. The only downside was that the food wasn't amazing - fine enough, but I'd go elsewhere for your meals. A wonderful place to stay though!

Excellent in every way

We enjoyed everything about our stay. Welcoming and attentive staff, a stunning location, extremely comfortable room and excellent bathroom facilities, and good cuisine. Would strongly recommend it to travellers seeking more than just a bed for the night.

Stop Over

Ideal for stop over for quick tour of Pretoria. In quiet suberb, a few nice walks to bird sanctuary etc availed. Very relaxed small hotel no tour parties! Staff very good throughout, service at dinner was a bit slow but the food was excellent when received.

unsere Zimmer waren sehr schön, Essen gut, schöne Aussicht, Pool leider im Innenhof 2 Damen an der Rezeption waren unmöglich. Sie machten den Eindruck als hätten sie keine Lust zum Arbeiten. Wir wurden nicht freundlich empfangen und auch sonst beim Vorbeigehen ignoriert.

Good area in a hotel with genuine 5 star rooms

Good stay with nice view from restaurant and veranda. Helpfull and friendly staff. Restaurant dinner was fine but over priced, not to mention the wine list which is a total rip off. Breakfast was average at best. Although room had no view it was top notch and true 5 star quality with luxurious bathroom. (Hotel was virtually empty but no upgrade to a room with a view was offered.) Plus : Staff and room quality. Minus : Restaurant and some small maintenance to bedone.

Disappointment

I arranged a romantic dinner beforehand, but when we got there the personnel had no knowledge of it. We informed them of the arrangements and they agreed to keep it, but when it was time for the dinner nothing was in place. We insisted that the arrangements be made as agreed, but nothing happened. We had to make arrangement at an offsite restaurant. There was no apology or attempt to rectify anything. The service the next day was excellent.

Pretoria's Secret Gem

From the moment we arrived until the time we departed we were treated like the long lost family who came home, and everybody at the hotel wanted to make sure we will remember our stay for long enough to come home again. I am very sure this is the secret undiscovered accommodation gem of Pretoria. Not only was the room extremely comfortable, clean and neat, but the attention to detail, turn down service and restocking of water, special toiletries, etc was just amazing. When I had a horrible headache the receptionist quickly sent someone to get me tablets at the shop without extra charges. Breakfast with fresh produce and various hot selections served with warm baked scones, croissants, muffins and breads is served daily. Although breakfasts are normally served until 10am, everything was still ready for us to be served with a warm smile when we were late. While staying in Pretoria we ate at many of the award winning restaurants, and cannot understand why this hotel's restaurant is not amongst those, because the food we had was surely better than what we had elsewhere and is once again the signature of proud staff who wants to show the best this city has to offer. Every staff member is part of a team with a goal to create a memorable stay. We enjoyed our stay so much that we lengthened our stay at the 131 on Herbert Baker St Hotel and decided this place is our future home whenever in Pretoria. Surely a place we will recommend without a moment's hesitation!
