Harnosand Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Harnosand
If you're planning a weekend trip to Harnosand you can look forward to exploring the city's nightlife, history, outdoor activities and plenty of other options.

With a spectacular location on the Swedish coast Hoga kusten, or The High Coast, Harnosand boasts magnificent sea views. Lots of travellers come here to lounge on one of the many beaches in the area, such as ever popular Smitingen, a gorgeous stretch of sand only five kilometres from the city centre. But don't worry if the weather isn't on your side you can visit Harnosand’s Swimming Baths offers pools for leisure swimmers and playful kids alike, as well as a relaxation area.

The city provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor sports, both in the centre and a bit further out of the city. Admire spectacular views from Vardkasbacken, where you can ski during winter, or try ice skating at the ice rink Hogslattens Ishall, which is open to the public. If the sun comes out you can't miss out on a round of golf at the 18-hole golf course Harnosands golfbana, where players can take in views of the river and the sea from a marvellous location on the peninsula Vagnon.

Culture vultures will be guaranteed a full schedule during their trip to Harnosand. Visit Harnosand Art Gallery to admire the Qvist collection, with works from masters such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall, as well as more than 500 works of art from the 18th and 19th centuries. At Harnosand’s Theater you can see shows, reviews and concerts, though most are performed in Swedish. The streets fill with visitors during the festival Harnosand Stadsfest, as the city hosts music events with many of the country's biggest acts.

One of the most iconic attractions is the Harnosand Cathedral, which looks out over the city from a hill. Venture inside to discover fascinating items from the 17th and 18th century. Continue your historic tour of the city with a visit to Hemso fastning, or Hemso Fortress. This defence structure was built in 1953 on the island of Hemso just outside Harnosand, and now invites visitors to explore its depths.

Travel to Harnosand by train or bus, taking you to the conveniently located Central Station. If you're venturing further afield, you can catch a local bus to your destination. Those arriving by plane will land at Sundsvall Timra Airport, about 30 kilometres from the city centre.

Harnosand is the perfect base for anyone wanting to explore all the gems along the High Coast in the north of Sweden. No matter what time of year you visit, you will always be guaranteed a unique experience.

"Well maintained, old wooden building with a few outdated budget interior choices. Good sized room, quiet and close to restaurants. Staff absent due to COVID-19 but thorough information sent over text and check in was easy. Slept well before starting a long hiking trip on the Höga Kusten trail."

"Billigt boende, passar bra om man liksom mig hade med egna sängkläder. Alltför tunn madrass, kände av spjälorna i ryggen. Extremt dålig wifi täckning, gick inte ens att ansluta. Ingen chromecast till tvn. Grusa backarna bättre så att man inte fastnar med bilen."
