Meatpacking District Travel Guide

Copenhagen

A cobblestone street lined with brick buildings, some with arched windows, under a clear blue sky.
A modern building with a curved glass facade and a sign reading "OPH CONFERENCE".
A rainbow flag mural with a row of bicycles in front.
A handwritten menu titled 'feed me Mother' listing various organic sourdough pizza options with prices.

Kødbyen is one of Copenhagen's top "going out" places, and its many restaurants, bars and galleries attract both locals and tourists.

Restaurants, bars, creative businesses, photographers, wholesale businesses, workshops and galleries are just a few of the things you will see on any trip to Kødbyen. It has recently become one of the trendiest and most popular areas in Copenhagen in which to hang out and go out on the town, and it's easy to see why – the area has it all.

Kødbyen (the Meatpacking district) used to be full of cattle, which were bought and sold here. In 1995, the Danish Agency for Culture gave the area protected status. As a result, you can now experience the district's industrial history as well as its modern lifestyle, creative culture, lifestyle and happy atmosphere.

Visit the many restaurants and bars in the area, and eat whatever you fancy. Visit the DGI-byen complex, and make the most of its various sports and bowling facilities, or see a photo exhibition at the Fotografisk Center. Make sure to check whether there are any events in the Øksnehallen building that you might enjoy. Right by Kødbyen, you will also find the famous Tivoli Gardens Amusement Park, where you can have fun all day long, and also Copenhagen's main station, Hovedbanegård.

In the summer, the Flæsketorvet Square turns into a market overflowing with fresh ingredients and a great vibe. So if you're considering a city break in Kødbyen, summer is a good time to come. The area is less than a mile south-west of Copenhagen's main station, so getting here is easy, no matter where you're travelling from.

Kødbyen mainly consists of Den Brune (the Brown) and Den Hvide (the White) Kødby (Meat City). When you see them, you'll soon discover where they got their names from – the colour of their buildings. Den Brune is the oldest area, built around 1900 due to an increased focus on public health and food hygiene, and Den Hvide was built about 30 years later.

If you want to experience something different on your weekend trip to Copenhagen, make sure to visit Kødbyen.
