The monument of Christopher Columbus was constructed at the site where Christopher Columbus first returned to Spain after his most famous voyage to the Americas. The sculptor Rafael Atche was supposed to depict Columbus pointing towards the New World, instead he is in fact pointing west towards his home in Genoa. The word "Tierra" (land) is inscribed.
