St. Mary's Cathedral
At over 800 years old, St. Mary’s Cathedral is one of the oldest cathedrals in Ireland still used as a place of worship. This ancient building in Limerick is a stalwart of Irish heritage and is visibly pockmarked by the trials it has endured. Situated on King’s Island in the middle of the Shannon River in Limerick, St. Mary’s Cathedral overlooks a landscape that must have changed beyond recognition since it was founded here in 1168 AD.
University of Limerick
Lying on the shores of the River Shannon in the city of Limerick, the University of Limerick is a vibrant, bustling hub of learning and culture in the heart of west Ireland.
St. John's Hospital
Founded in 1780 by Lady Hartstonge and several other benefactors as a “fever and lock” hospital, St. John’s Hospital in Limerick famously treated patients during the Great Famine of 1845-1847. This was one of Ireland’s greatest ever public health catastrophes, and a time when great strain was placed on the health systems and entire fabric of society. Had it not been for public hospitals, the situation could have been significantly worse.
