The setting is stunning, the room very homely and comfortable. The breakfast was amazing, with local quality ingredients. The lady on reception was very helpful. She was warm, looked after me and made me feel very comfortable as a loan traveller.

Fence Gate Lodge was a really pleasant surprise. Beautifully appointed, straightforward stay and experience. Fab breakfast. Lots to do locally. We ate and drank at the Fence Inn hotel across the road. Had an amazing dinner at the Michelin star - white swan which is just a few mins away. .. and enjoyed a Penske Witches tour and drive around the picturesque countryside. Great time!
Staying at Fence Gate was a delight in every way. From the moment we arrived, we felt like VIPs. The care and attention of the employees goes above and beyond. A great big shout out to Jordan at the front desk and the woman in the kitchen who called us in the morning to check to see if we were running late and wanting to join for breakfast. The housekeeper was a very personable, hard working woman who made sure we had extra cookies and water. Thank you Fence Gate. We'll be back!
Excellent reception by a very friendly and efficient receptionist (Kirsty). Lovely room although noisy when traffic builds on the main road close by.
Good beer and service in the Fence Gate pub and restaurant nearby.
Splendid breakfast served by the lovely Debs.
Always a pleasure to say here.
Lovely hotel, my and 2 teenage sons stayed. Perfect stay, great staff, beautiful surroundings. Just 5 mins drive away from the the town, 10 from the town centre.
Restaurant and bar is also fab. Would highly recommend.
Very pleasant stay. The bar was lemon existent you need to go across the road if you want a drink. The breakfast was very nice even though no one knew how to use the coffee machine 😳 and the toaster wasn’t set up right!
The staff was welcoming and friendly. The reception was excellent, it was furnished and decorated by the owner using their used clothes. A great idea, well furnished to the overall style. The room was clean and very comfortable. The added bonus of their sister restaurant across th3 road sealed it. An excellent place to stay and very highly recommended.
The room was decorated beautifully lovely bed and bedding can’t fault the hotel at all breakfast was perfect.
My only complaint would be the price £172 for one night is expensive for the size of the room my bathroom at home is bigger than the hotel room.
We were slightly nervous about our stay as the hotel had received some mixed reviews. We need not have worried - our room was superb and the staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. Despite being in a room close to the road (which had been mentioned in previous comments) there was no real road noise and the hotel was so quiet at night that we thought we were the only guests. It was only at breakfast next morning that we realised that the hotel was quite full.
Quiet location, room very clean if little on the small side - but then the building does date from the 1800's ! Staff excellent - friendly, helpful and efficient.
Beautiful hotel and amazing rooms. Only Continental Breakfast available. We weren’t told on check in. Not great to only get toast and cheese for breakfast considering the price we paid.
Had a family dinner in town returned with my 2 children to the hotel after 1am to find the front door locked and no night porter. Unable to raise any staff. Ended up walking 500mts to the fence gate to wake a staff member by banging on the door. My brother returned to the fence gate lodge an hour later than us and ended up having to sleep on the hotel door step until kitchen staff arrived at 6am.
When i discussed with the front desk the next morning the girl said they were short staffed and apologised. I asked if she thought a guest of a 5 star hotel should have to sleep on the porch...she just shrugged and said she would speak to her manager and call me...i am still waiting for the call...i gave them the chance to make amends but their managerial customer service was dreadful. The only redeeming thing was the breakfast and the serving staff, very helpful. I'm a gold member of hotels.com and in normal non covid times would buy upwards of 250 rooms per year. Never ever have had to sleep on the door step of a hotel before....because of a night porter shortage! Beware returning late to this hotel, make sure you have a front door key! We laugh about it now but wasnt funny at the time with a wife and 2 kids crying with fatigue!
