This was an amazing place to stay. The owner and the employees were abundantly friendly and helpful, food was great, the atmosphere was unlike anything else.
Calm and peaceful place at the enterance of the national park. Good staff kinldy arrange pickup service from airport and trekking tour. Enjoy your great experience!
The staff at the Orangutan Hotel rocks!! Their Orangutan Treking guides certainly live up to their reputation, and I managed to see several Orangutans on my one and only trek into the rainforest..I was later told that many people spend days in the jungle without seeing anything, so I feel very lucky.
The hotel has some great views and is located in an excellent spot in relationship to local shops and restaurants.

had an excellent guide - Mona who not only found us orangutans but was incredibly kind when my son got vertigo - taking us to the local doctor for assistance. The room (we stayed in the penthouse) was incredibly clean and the view amazing. Monkeys jumped on our roof and ate fruits from the tree right outside our window. An amazing experience.

Has potential
This is a small boutique hotel, where you are treated as a family when you arrive.
Downside is that there was no restaurant at the hotel, and no bar, so it didn't really create a place to 'hang out'.
there were good food options around, but it would have been great if the hotel itself atleast offered drinks/snacks..
Apart from that, the staff was very helpful and took care of all transports, guided trips etc.

Disliked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Great place. All the comforts required.
Good food and cold beer!

We'd recommend the Orangutan for hardy travelers. We ascended a long flight of uneven steps each day to the "sky room", where we shared the treetops with macaques. The very accommodating hotel staff carried two cups of coffee up those steps each day. You're immersed here in everything that happens in the village, where tourists come for jungle treks and staff and guides for the most part were born and raised here.
We stayed at the Hotel Orangutan because of its status as a non profit organization. They dedicate a portion of their profits to preserving the orangutans and their habitat. From the minute we arrived, we were treated like family. All the staff were super friendly and helpful. Most evenings someone was in the lobby playing a guitar and singing - super chill vibe here. The hotel arranged a private day-long trek for us with guides Apri and Andra. It was an incredible experience we will never forget and our guides were knowledgeable, friendly and experienced. We asked for a challenging trek to see as many orangutans as possible and the day far exceeded our expectations! We would highly recommend the Hotel Orangutan. We were in the Sky room and had monkeys come daily to our deck. The room was huge and the condition was good - sparse, but typical of Bukit Lawang.
The room was very simple. No AC but we had fans which was fine. I was not a fan of the bathroom. It was a natural environment which was appealing but it was very smelly and dark.
The hotel and it's restaurant are perfectly acceptable, but the website fails to point out that the most comfortable rooms are housed in a separate annex which is located at the top of a VERY steep slope behind the main hotel. The steps up to this annex are precipitous and totally unsuitable for the elderly, asthmatics or guests with any kind of mobility restrictions. We had no hot water throughout our 3 days there, but the staff are fun and the food is honest and tasty.
