"I recently stayed in a Choice brand hotel in Newark, NJ, which was a disappointment. My Northlands Motel booking involved a last-minute change of plans, and I didn’t realize it was part of the same chain, which isn’t the hotel brand I normally stay in. I’m glad I didn’t know that, as I might have assumed the experience would be comparable and passed. It turned out to be much better than the hotel. I hadn’t stayed in a motel in years but this one was perfect for what I needed, which was a decent room to spend one night in State College, PA. The room was extremely clean and recently renovated. The attendant was friendly, thoughtful, and thorough at check-in. Her thoughtfulness was the difference between the disappointing experience at the hotel and the unexpectedly superior experience at the motel. It was quiet when I was there, although of course, that can depend on who is checked in, and conveniently located for downtown, the university, and businesses on Atherton, without being right on busy Atherton. There is a microwave and refrigerator in the room and Weis grocery store next to the motel, as well as numerous restaurants nearby. And parking is, of course, free. I have stayed in quite a few places in State College over the past few years, and I would recommend Northlands Motel near Penn State University for anyone who is looking for a clean, comfortable room at a great price. "

"This hotel could use some upgrades, especially for the price I paid for my stay. Some areas for improvement: 1. Outside signage - I had to circle the block a couple times to find the driveway entrance. Was made more difficult due to the small sign and construction next door. 2. Menu in restaurant is limited and could use updating. 3. There was ONE person working the restaurant on Sunday morning and she was overwhelmed - typically a busy time for breakfast with people checking out, and there was a girls sports team staying the weekend. 4. Upgrade to SMART TVs so people can use streaming services on the tv not their personal devices (if they brought any) 5. Upgrade charging ports to USB-C 5. Shower was nice but floor was very slick - falling hazard especially for older guests. 6. Elevators were absurdly slow and wait times were too long considering three elevators for a relatively small hotel. 7. Put real coffee makers in rooms. 8. Rooms were nicely appointed but common areas could use upgrades."

"The air conditioning wouldn’t switch to heat. It got pretty cold overnight. Woke up this morning and went to go take a shower, and the hot water did not work. I sat there and let it run for 10 minutes and still wouldn’t warm up. The room was in decent shape though"
