Not really a hotel, but a beautiful, quiet, ancient retreat centre run by Quakers offering b&b. Perfectly comfortable, and a lovely garden, but some of the facilities are a little dated and tired (the shower taps were hard to figure out for example). Dont let that stop you coming though, it will be good for your soul as well as your body.
Nice location, clean room
And then...
- the room's windows open to the outdoor area, and guests partied until very late
- temperature outside was 30, no aircon, just a little fan
- wash basin in the bedroom (??) not in the bathroom
Pretty place very restful and a good breakfast included.
The duvet tog seemed a bit much for the summer especially with a foam topper but otherwise I couldn’t fault it.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
the interior does not match the exterior, but given the rate, a good stay still.
The radiators didn't work, so heating was provided by 3 electric heaters at different corners of the room. Things had clearly been like that for a while as each radiator was labelled with our room number.
Also, there was a regular noise every 5 minutes or so from the pipework which wasn't a problem during the day but which was annoying at night.
Other than that the room was nice and the continental breakfast was excellent
No staff at check in, place deserted just a room key left on table. Room small dismal damp carpet. No ensuite. Bathroom along corridor grotty and shabby.
Door locks very difficult to use.
Overall very unpleasant place, never again.
Nice gardens. Very expensive for such an unpleasant stay
well worth the price. clean friendly staff lovely and quite nice grounds.

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Friendly staff but room a little cramped and did not expect wash basin in bedroom with toilet behind a rickety sliding door.
Breakfast was very poor with little choice, not restocked, teas and coffees in a flask that was cold, also run out of fruit juice.
Probably the worst continental breakfast ever! Breakfast is “served” from 7.00 until 9.00. We arrived just before 8.00am. No staff visibly on duty, and empty baskets and empty plates with one slice of salami remaining. We found a gentleman in the kitchen who said “If nothing is there then its all gone. If you can wait 25 minutes I will heat two croissants.” Far worse than Fawlty Towers.

Manor House is just awful
I don’t know if the non main house rooms are better but my room in the
Main house was so awful I had to check out. After a meeting arrived back at hotel late , it was dark and dangerous, couldn’t get in main door, no reception, finally telephoned someone and had to put my shoulder against the door to get in! The room was awful. Incredibly dated and basic, bits all over the floor. The heating didn’t work, turned on a heater and filled the room with a smell of hot dust. The overflow in the bathroom ran continuously and sounded like the niagra falls and every few minutes a fan kicked in like a train passing. On the bed were two tiny towels. There was no bedside table so you had to walk across the room to turn off the nearest light and somehow find your way back into bed in the pitch dark. The bathroom resembled student halls. The corridor carpets were stained and basic. All staff disappeared early evening so there was no one to assist. I checked out at 10.30 pm which shows how bad it was. I have since found reports of the fan and toilet overflow on other websites so this is clearly known about but not attended too.
With the help of Hotels.com I did manage to get a refund. !

Disliked: Property conditions & facilities
Terrible hotel, great staff.
Terrible first night in tiny single room in the Manor, couldn't control heating, room far too hot, open windows couldn't be secured so rattled all night. Squeaky, bouncy bed. 'Private bathroom' actually separate from room so had to lock room (lock impossible to understand), take massive bathroom key and towells to bathroom, which was very uninviting, lock up and unlock again. Didn't appreciate label on shower dispenser saying Do Not Remove, or one above taps saying Hot Water - ??? Felt like an institution. Although almost empty, all people staying were housed next to each other in the Manor, so when some of them decided to have a party we all had to suffer. The walls are very thin, and my bed actually shook when neighbours stomped about. Breakfast was what you'd expect from a 3 star place, but coffee was undrinkable. Only allowed to use 2 of the tables; again, unfriendly and institutional. I had such a bad night that I decided to leave rather than complete my stay, but happily for me met the head of housekeeping on my way out (whoever was supposed to actually be in charge had not arrived), and she was brilliant. She persuaded me to look at a much better room, in the barn, where there was no one else booked in next to me, and I had a huge (though still pretty institutional) bathroom, the heating could be turned off and the windows opened, and the bed was good. So glad I didn't have to look for another place to stay, and slept much better. Thank you Lisa!
Great little gem out in the countryside in a small village.
Great pub called the The Chequers great landlord and landlady who were very hospitable and welcoming serving great food.
Comfortable and basic accommodation. Continental breakfast was adequate, the closest to a cooked breakfast was boiling your own eggs which was fine and made the experience unique.
Our bedroom was on the third floor, no lifts, so you need to be aware that if you have mobility issues to request a lower floor for your needs.
The hotel is away from civilisation so if you want to visit shops or go for a coffee be prepared to travel to find them.
One point to make others aware which did not bother us in the slightest is that this establishment is owned and run by the Quakers (which is not mentioned in Hotel description on Hotels.com)
We will book again if we are down that way again as it is a very quiet and comfortable hotel.
I booked a single room, I was working in the area, it was a really beautiful location. My room was in The Vokings, a converted barn, it was very simple, like student accommodation, but had everything I needed.
The Manor and gardens and courtyard are really lovely, my room was very basic but comfortable and was not expensive at all. Thank you 😊🙏
Very nice location, beautiful house and grounds. Nice welcome and friendly, helpful staff. Plenty of choice for the continental breakfast. The house has history so as you would expect, a little rough around the edges in the room and bathroom, but very clean and comfortable. Would recommend for a very peaceful relaxed couples break.
