We had an enjoyable, peaceful stay. We were upgraded free of charge to a better unit you which we were very happy about. The only thing was the dirt road to get there is quite bad - need a bakkie or 4 wheel drive. No Cellphone signal. Wifi only in reception which is not very good quality.
Fantastic lodge, well equipped, with outstanding beautiful surroundings, it is ideal for to chillout and walks around the surrounding area

We booked the luxury family suite for 2 adults, and although beds were very comfortable and room was clean and the food was basic but wholesome and tasty. We found little things were just not up to scratch. ie we had a fire in our room and we had to go outside the room to get more wood they didnt put the wood in the room. We also had to ask for towels in the room on the one day as they had been removed. Had we wanted a shower before dinner there would have been no towels. The power went off for a night when there and there was no candle in the room just a paraffin lantern which was broken and hard to light. The lodge also did not have normal water bottles to place in the rooms when the electric blankets were not able to be used. The lodge has a charm about it but it was a very draughty lodge with lots of gaps around door frames and windows and given how cold it was the lodge was still cold inside. There was a very warming fireplace in the main area however the seating was set so far back from it and guests were having to put chairs closer to the fire only to find that the next day the chairs had been removed again away from the fire. Staff did not assist in moving the chairs either. All in all a lot more attention to detail would lift this lodge to another level. Wifi really not great and extremely slow (which is mentioned on the website) and no cell phone signal at all.
The Penwarn farm is out of the way by Bushman's Nek. You need to drive a couple of kilometers outside of Underberg then 16 km on a dirt road then 3 km on a rough driveway. You will need a 4X4. The farm only has intermittent wi-fi but you won't need that while you are here anyway. The food is delicious (restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner). The farm tour was a lot of fun. They run a very large dairy and also have a lot of horses. Part of the farm used to be a hunting reserve so there are still wild eland, wildebeest, ostrich, and other wild animals. There are a lot of birds here too. I highly recommend staying here. It is a great, relaxing place where you can hike, horseback ride, or drive around the beautiful Underberg area. It is also close to Sani Pass which is very fun to drive up.
