Explore the Wadden Sea, be there for the enchanting Tønder Festival, enjoy the historic town centre, visit Schackenborg Slot or drive over the causeway to Rømø.

If you’re travelling to Tønder, a wealth of things to do and enjoy await, such as sweeping scenery, art and history. Explore the historic market town, famous for its unique architecture and idyllic centre with cobbled streets and lively shops. There’s always something going on here.

Tønder Festival is a folk music extravaganza, or you can explore the atmospheric Christmas market in December. Just beyond the town is the Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Outstanding animal life in the form of seals and millions of migrating birds can be seen here – see them up close on an oyster safari to harvest the wealth of the sea. And if you can’t get enough of Denmark’s no. 1 aphrodisiac, come for the Tønder Oyster Week in the middle of October.

Tønder was granted its charter as far back as 1243, making it the oldest market town in Denmark. The town is just 3 miles from the German border, and the fascinating history and culture of Tønder and the region are found everywhere in the border area. Schackenborg Slot in nearby Møgeltønder is a prime example follow your visit with a gourmet dinner and a stay at Schackenborg Slotskro.

Regardless of whether you're only here for a weekend break or a whole holiday, there is always plenty to do. Visit the pearl of the Wadden Sea, Rømø, to enjoy the endless beaches. Take a swim, fly kites or experience the thrill of the fun ‘blokarts’ – a special kind of wind-powered beach buggy. The European Blokart Championships are held here in May, and 50,000 kite enthusiasts from all over the world descend on the island in early September.

Even though Tønder could hardly be described as a big city, there is lots of entertainment and life in the town. Enjoy world-class Nordic art at the Kunstmuseet, or take a trip back in time to the Iron Age in the subterranean museum, Hjemsted Oldtidspark. During the holiday season, the farms are inhabited by working Iron Age families, to show what life was like in Denmark in the past. You can also try your hand at activities such as archery.

Come to Tønder and discover one of Denmark’s most charming market towns. Experience the unique scenery of the Wadden Sea National Park and learn more about the fascinating history of the borderlands.
