  • Joseph Winthrop Holley, born in 1874 to former slaves in Winnsboro, South Carolina, founded the institution in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute. W. E. B. Du Bois inspired Holley to return to the South after he read Du Bois's writings on the plight of Albany's blacks in The Souls of Black Folk. Holley relocated to Albany to start a school. With the help of a $2,600 gift from the Hazard family, Holley organized a board of trustees and purchased 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land for the campus, all within a year. The aim of the institution at the time was to provide elementary education and teacher training for the local Black population. It was turned over to the state of Georgia in 1917 as Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, a two-year agricultural and teacher-training institution. In 1932, the school became part of the University System of Georgia and in 1943 it was granted four-year status and renamed Albany State College. The transition to four-year status heavily increased the school's enrollment. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program, a prelude to the school being upgraded to university status in 1996.

Very friendly father and so clean. Well lit as we arrived late, room was simple seems like a recent remodel or motel conversion. Fresh paint, very clean sheets, simple towels. Bring your own shampoo, but just enough here to tidy up. Definitely will stay again, thank you for the repeat reviews of the gentleman traveler.

I stay a few days every week for work at Albany. Yes, I drive...why? I checked every budget hotel in Albany and unless...weed, screams, shady people and parties all night long, is your thing, go ahead. This hotel is quiet, CLEAN, and the staff are.great without the big price tag.

Okay

Room smelled of marijuana and there was no toilet paper stocked in the room. But we just needed a place to rest for the night and it served its purpose. Staff was friendly enough, check in was easy.

What a great place to stay!

We thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay at the Sylvester Inn. We only stayed one night, but we had the best night's sleep in our king bed. The room was very clean and the staff really went above and beyond. I can't say enough kind words or recommend them enough. Thanks for everything @

I have been staying in this hotel, during a travel assigmemt for work. I tryed MANY hotels around the area. From Tyfton to Albany and this is a much better option. Clean, quiet and safe. So far love this place.
