St. Kitts and Nevis is a two-island country in the West Indies with charming colonial architecture and ample outdoor activities. Explore historic sugar plantations, go horseback riding on the beach and listen to live salsa and jazz music at fun village festivals.

First settled by Native Americans, St. Kitts and Nevis was later influenced by the arrival of Christopher Columbus. English is the only official language here, though you might also hear local English-based Creole dialects being spoken.

St. Kitts’ capital, Basseterre, is a bustling city surrounded by mountains. Pack a lunch to enjoy in Independence Square, a local gathering place and a prime spot for people-watching. Feast on Caribbean cuisine and wander along the pier and marina in Port Zante, a popular docking point for cruise ships.

Be sure to get out and see St. Kitts abundant natural beauty. Swim in the calm waters of Cockleshell Beach and Turtle Beach, hike up Mount Liamuiga or go to South Friar’s Bay in the southeast to go snorkeling.

Head south to Nevis to see the island’s capital, Charlestown, which has retained much of its colonial charm. Learn about a famous local at Alexander Hamilton Museum, which chronicles the story of the prominent American statesman who was born on the island. Swim in the pool at the Bath Hotel & Spring House. The main building now houses government offices, but this was once a popular hotel for rich and famous visitors in the 18th century.

Fly into Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport on the outskirts of Basseterre. To travel between the islands, take a 45-minute passenger ferry from Basseterre or Charlestown. You can explore both Basseterre and Charlestown on foot. Rent a car to discover the more remote parts of the islands. For the best weather and accommodation prices, consider a trip in November or December.
