This was one spectacular sunset. Located way up on the western coast of the Shimokita Peninsula, Hotokegaura is one spot not to be missed on an exploration of Northern Japan. The hotel's check-in system needed an upgrade, and the afternoon check-in wait was excessively long. We booked a room for four people and were told that we needed to lay out the tatami mats ourselves, which was a bit inconvenient for foreigners, as all the other hotels on this trip had laid out extra tatami mats for us before check-in. Another major problem was the strong odor in the toilet; I had to borrow air freshener from the front desk. However, the hotel breakfast deserves praise; it had a wide variety of choices and tasted delicious.
