Step into the Cave of the Elders (Cueva de los Viejos), an archaeological site where Guanche dwellings were discovered. Before the 15th-century arrival of Hispanic travellers to the Canary Islands, El Sauzal was an important Guanche settlement in Tenerife. Baroque churches such as Temple of Our Lady of Los Angeles from the early 1500s show that it retained its significance once European settlers had moved onto the island.
Wander around the east of the town to find the historic centre of the community. Marvel at the 15th- and 16th-century buildings scattered around this old-world district. Look for the white-stone Church of St. Peter the Apostle, built in the 1500s, and the Sierva de Dios Museum House, which tells the story of Sister María de Jesús.
Sip on vintages grown from Tenerife’s volcanic terroir in the Honey and Wine House. Here, a tavern serving local specialties is backed by a vineyard growing over 20 grape varietals. Pick up El Sauzal-flavored souvenirs in the gift shop.
Experience Tenerife’s natural beauty outside the town centre. Los Lavaderos is a picturesque garden with paths that cross stone bridges and beneath waterfalls. Head to the ocean at La Garañona Bay or Playa de Rojas for dramatic coastal scenery.
El Sauzal is located only 15 minutes away from Tenerife Norte Airport by car or about 30 minutes on one of the island’s buses. Visit the coast in spring or fall, when the days are still warm but it is easier to dodge the masses of crowds who come to Tenerife in summer. Stay here during February and March for Tenerife’s energetic Santa Cruz Carnival season, when different towns across the island throw huge parties.
