Sarapiqui rainforest lodge was one of the highlights of our three week trip round Costa Rica which saw us stay in 7 different hotels! It really was what i thought an ecolodge experience would be. The rounds huts were really great, the hotel has a lot of beautiful grounds and an amazing infinity pool surrounded by gardens and rainforest. We saw all manner of birds and wildlife from the pool including toucans and a huge lizard which actually briefly got in the pool with the children much to their squeals of delight (or was it fright)! The staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough for us. One morning we missed breakfast as we were off early on a trip (Dave and Dave's nature park). When we got back we were plied with orange juice and fresh fruits and asked whether we wanted anything else. It was such a personal service - they actually realised we missed breakfast and wanted to make sure we were ok. The buffet breakfast was great and in the evening there is a buffet to A La Carte to choose from. The food was really good and good value. As others have said the rooms are fairly basic but more than good enough. We didn't spend hardly any time in them - there was too much to do! Everything in Sarapiqui is close at hand. Right next door to Sarapiqui lodge is Tirimbina rainforest reserve. You could walk through the hotel grounds into the reserve. Do the chocolate tour and night walk there. Go white water rafting and visit Dave and Dave's nature park just up the road. Must see place
Hotel is set back from the road along the river which you can hear but not access. Very relaxing, peaceful setting. Good place to stay for a couple of nights if rafting.
It is truly a rainforest lodge experience. The grounds, pool, and nearby reserve are beautiful. Don't miss walking through the nature trail where many plants' medicinal uses are explained. Rooms are good sized, lots of hot water with good pressure. But the cacophony of insects and birds, which can't be muted as the window/door has no shutters or glass, just a screen, might keep some awake. A few bugs in the room were expected with normal clearances under the doors, not needing to be sealed in this climate, and not a fault of the hotel's cleanliness. If you are expecting an authentic rainforest experience you will not be disappointed. Breakfast was average, typical Costa Rican "gringo hotel" fare but with friendly service. There's not much of a town, just a few tour outposts and maybe a restaurant or two. But you would mostly be visiting this area for rafting, ecotourism, or outdoor adventures.
We stayed here for 2 nights. We couldn't get a room at tirimbina lodge so had to pay more to stay here. The place is great and the staff were really helpful, especially when we were trying to get to an activity park without our own car. If you have no car then the location leaves you very isolated. On our last night we encountered 3 large cockroaches. I would suggest closing off the gaps under the doors to your rooms to avoid this happening in the future. We couldn't sleep much because of that as my girlfriend was really on edge about it.
