Examine work by a famous Italian sculptor and shop for unique coins and stamps at this attractive city centre plaza.
Piazza Garibaldi is a laid-back and picturesque square located within San Marino’s city center. It’s a place often passed on walking tours of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of San Marino. Visit Piazza Garibaldi to see public art pieces and striking architectural structures and browse souvenir stores.
Perched above a flowerbed and overlooking the north side of the square is a bust of the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi. Created in 1882, the bust is the work of the well-known sculptor Stefano Galletti. Behind the monument is the 19th-century Hotel Titano, which stretches to nearby Piazza di Titano. Enjoy lunch or dinner accompanied by wondrous views at the hotel’s rooftop restaurant.
Face the west side of the square and admire the elegant arcade, which houses a collection of souvenir shops. At the end of the arcade is the Philatelic and Numismatic State Society, which displays and sells collectable coins, stamps and phone cards. These include uncirculated items, commemorations of sporting achievements and dedications to worldwide events such as World Kiss Day.
Elsewhere at the square you’ll find a café, jeweler and perfume shop. Walk past the southern edge to a viewpoint that looks out over the rolling landscapes of San Marino and surrounding provinces of Italy.
Piazza Garibaldi is just a short walk from major city attractions, including Liberty Square and Piazza del Titano. The distances between the squares are short, but the climbs are fairly steep. Go to Liberty Square to visit the Palazzo Pubblico and watch the ceremony for the changing of the guard. Check out the Statue of Liberty, another work of art by Stefano Galletti. Piazza del Titano is home to the State Museum of San Marino. Also nearby is the Museum of Torture.
