A gem amidst the spices
We loved the Spice Garden. It is a beautiful property set amidst hillsides growing cardamom and pepper, with attractive buildings and blossoming gardens. The staff are warm, friendly and helpful. And the local activities are great - we enjoyed a visit to a tea plantation and a wonderful walk in the Periyar nature reserve, both booked through the hotel. We would stay there again if we come back.

Highly recommend this place! Beautiful resort tucked away in the middle of spice capital of the world. Staff is super friendly and very helpful, they are always there to help you and will go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable, on site traditional Kerala massages are available too. This is the place to cost, If you are looking for real Kerala traditional experience.

It was an excellent property nested in nature. Very well designed and furnished, our 2 cottages, one with a pool and other with a large patio were a treat to stay in.

Our stay at Shalimar Spice Garden was the highlight of our time in South India--we only wish we had booked more than just two nights! The setting is idyllic, the staff is lovely, the food is delicious, and overall it is an island of beauty and serenity. We cannot recommend it highly enough!

Wonderful oasis.
Absolutely lovely secluded venue with individual private bungalows. Very attentive staff, excellent food and adequate swimming pool and spa facilities. Would highly recommend for a stay in Thekkady.

Excellent.
Excellent. wonderful location. The Nature walk around the property is a must! Friendly staff. Very pretty hotel and good service. The 'Tiger Reserve' was a bit of a disappointment but still a nice visit but what really makes this place is the lovely town of Kumily and the Spice gardens all around. Wonderful. Really enjoyed our stay.

Great hotel in the midst of a spice garden
This medium sized hotel has roof thatched cottages at different levels. The hotel has its own spice garden, beautiful birds and animals. The surroundings are really serene and calming. The rooms are very aesthetic and you can sit out in your private verandah and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The restaurant too is pretty and serves good food. It is also close to a tiger sanctuary and an elephant farm. One can visit and enjoy elephant rides. The staff at the hotel are very helpful and service oriented. We really enjoyed staying in this hotel.

calme et au vert
séjour très agréable dans cet hôtel, loin du bruit incessant de toutes les villes et villages de l'Inde, le restaurant est un des meilleurs que l'on a testé pendant notre voyage. nous n'avons pas essayé le spa qui était désert. la piscine était très froide et dommage que certains clients se croient à Disney land à se prendre en photo au milieu des bungalows sinon notre séjour aurait été parfait

Toll um sich zu erholen
Das resort liegt ausserhalb der stadt mitten in der natur. Die bungalows sind so angelegt, so dass man sich hervorragend erholen kann. Das essen ist sehr gut.

Only for the nature lover
The fan wasn't working in the room we were shown, so we were upgraded to a cottage. The room was tidy but felt spartan since there was no TV, air conditioning or WiFi. I understood that they were trying to keep it minimalistic since the resort is located in the woods and they want to wake up the nature lover in each customer. The walk around the garden was very nice and the ambience was serene. This would be a good place to stay if getting disconnected from the rest of the world doesn't bother you.

Unassuming gateway to paradise
Must say this was a surprise package in my Kerela trip, although i got to stay there for 1 night, but the place truly deserves a lengthy stay. Beautiful and serene surroundings, great massages, absolutely courteous staff, just perfect comfort in the rooms, limited but delicious servings, what more one can ask for?

At home in the lap of nature
It was a nice stay in Spice garden.All the services are excellent in the resort.There Chef's are too good and they didn't make you feel that you came to south as they are expert in every regional dish.It's a value for money resort and the staff are polite and gentle.

Amazing getaway
We stayed in Shalimar Spice Garden for 3 nights in April and had an amazing time. It's a quiet place tucked away amidst greenery. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and made us feel really welcome. We never had to call the housekeeping to clean the room. Would want to specifically mention Shirley from the front desk and Anish from the restaurant for their warmth and courteousness. We had a great time unwinding there and would definitely want to return to stay there. The hotel property contains an actual spice garden and vegetable garden which is used by the restaurant. Although the options at the restaurant is limited for vegetarians, everything we ordered was really tasty. Would really want to commend the gardener there as well for doing a great job in maintaining a diverse variety of trees/plants on the property. The landscaping of the garden is a treat for the eyes.The hotel does offer a complimentary wifi but the connection tends to be iffy - not that it really mattered since it's great to be completely disconnected in these surroundings. A nice book and a hammock by the pool and life seems blissful. The location is such that it is easier to reach and move around if you have your own car or taxi. The hotel does provide a taxi transfer but tends to be on the pricier side. Tip - they will get you a tuk-tuk to go to nearby places. We highly recommend Shalimar Spice Garden and would love to stay there again.

Do not try to change money at the hotel, the exchange rate was very very very poor, worst we found in India! Hotel is set on hill side so you need to be fit though staff do carry your cases, we wouldn't have been able to!

Perfection
This place is so beautiful and perfect. The Hotel is gentle on your senses and invites you in to it's warm and comforting glow. The staff are AMAZING, all so kind and helpful and fun...I really felt like I was with family! The plantations on the grounds are fantastic and it's great to see how environmentally responsible the hotel is...BRILLIANT AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Excellent setting for a nice peaceful relaxation
Without doubt the Shalimar Spice Gardens my favourite hotel during my stay in Kerala. If you want a 5 star experience in the hub of activity this isn’t the place for you. But if you want a stay in an individual rustic, quirky, and idyllically peaceful setting then you will love it here. This is definitely the place to unwind. There is a small pool if the temperature is warm enough for you to swim and some great swinging hammocks in the grounds. I was very grateful to be upgraded to one of the small cottages. These are built into the hillside. So although porters help with the luggage it probably isn’t the best location if you have mobility problems. There are good walks in the area and a small village close by with a few local shops. The people are all very friendly both inside and outside of the hotel. In fact there seemed to be a very good spirit amongst the staff. Shirley’s greeting was both friendly and efficient. I only stayed here one night but on reflection wished I had stayed two nights. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to other visitors. I was made to feel very welcome throughout my stay.

Excellent place to stay
Excellent place to stay if you love nature. The resort is in the middle of cardamom plantation. The staff are so welcoming and homely. I stayed here for three nights and enjoyed my stay. You won't even need to switch on the fan in the room. The one thing that is lacking in this place is sports activities. The swimming pool temperature needs to be controlled.

Paradise on earth
Set outside of Kumuli, Thekaddy and Periyar in a spice garden, where the spices, tea and coffee come from to the kitchen, very tasteful kerala-design cottages with all comfort, just wonderful! Very personal service, helpful staff - all positive experience!

Shalimar Spice Garden in Thekkady
This hotel has a serene and beautiful location and contains pleasant grounds with spices, fruit trees, flowers, etc. It is very scenic and beautiful. At the Spice Garden, you can relax and absorb nature. The staff was very helpful and we appreciate our rooms being upgraded to cottages.

The quiet side of India
We stayed 2 nights during Nov 2011 as visitors from the USA. It was quite brisk in the morning, light jackets needed. They dont lie about not being handicap excessable, it was several dozen rock steps down to the lobby alone. (Porters take your baggage:) But if you're physically able it makes for beautiful landscaping. It's quiet with a lot of greenery, beautiful statues,a chilly pool, very very clean rooms and the most friendly staff. The food was delicious and mid range in price. They have a great outdoor stone grilling area where a chef prepares dishes before your eyes for evening meals. We have no real issues or complaints just two things to mention: there is very little hot water in the rooms for showering, I had just put soap in my hair when the water started getting cold (while not a neccessity I was looking forward to a hot shower after our long trip there). Second we had massages while we were there and we feel the need to say that you need to specify if you have strong feelings about having a male or female massage therapist and also that in India compared to the USA they were much less concerned with modesty. Be sure to ask for a robe or towel if you are less than a free spirit! We were both impressed with the staff as they were more than willing to help schedule activities(of which they offer many) and transportation all with a smile! There was in- house entertainment of some local dancers one of the nights we were there, which made for an excellent pre dinner show. The outdoor TV room has the only TV available for guests but while we were there the guests used it more as an outdoor reading room, which was fine with us. The natural surroundings at Shalimar make it a prime place to relax, unwind and feel at home with nature. We would definately stay again and strongly recommend it!
