Locally known as the Purple People Bridge, the former L&N Railroad bridge was built in 1872 linking Newport KY to Cincinnati OH. The last train crossed in 1987 and the last automobile crossed in 2001. After a renovation including a coat of light purple paint, the bridge reopened to pedestrians as the Newport Southbank Bridge. At over a half mile long (2670 feet), it is the longest pedestrian bridge linking two states.
