Staff was very accommodating when I arrived late to the hotel. Room had all the amenities that I needed. I enjoyed the vintage decor. Location was safe and walkable to Av. do Mar for restaurants and shopping.
This property was a true Portuguese Experience. The owners are so amazing!!! The rooms are not upgraded but it was fine for us. We loved it and would go back! Great location and close to so many restaurants and walk anywhere. I would highly recommend this property.
Umberto, Jon and his wife are very attentive, helpful and friendly, often going out of their way to help. Beautiful historic building is kept spotlessly clean and comfortable.

We have just returned from a short break to Madeira and had a lovely stay. John the owner is a lovely gentleman and his son Alberto made us very welcome. The hotel is very central and only a five minute walk to the cable car, buses and restaurants. Although the hotel is dated decor wise it is spotlessly clean. We had the breakfast and the Madeira breakfast rolls are delicious, the breakfast is great value. We will return to this hotel. Thanks John and your family for a lovely trip!
Absolutely the most caring and friendly family run hotel. Minutes walk to central Funchal area. Such a lovely welcome from Humberto to this homely traditional hotel, was even shown and given a choice of rooms. My room with a balcony had the most beautiful views, with en suite bathroom, where, may I say, the cleanliness is superb, from pure white towels, bedding etc.(I walked on my room carpets with white socks where the soles were spotless when I removed them!) We met John, Humberto's dad at breakfast, again with such a warm and friendly welcome to take our order for breakfast, which was unbelievably good at an exceptionally low price. Fabulous coffee and Portuguese rolls etc :) How lovely on the last day of our holiday too. We were leaving at 4.30am and both John and Alberto were there to say goodbye. Can't wait to return.
After a late email regarding checkin time, check the small print, i finally checked into room number 11, this took me back 40 years as it was so old fashioned with sheets on the bed, mis matched carpets, a 40 year old tv, power point beside the bed coming away from the wall. The toilet has to be one of the most disgusting i have had as part of my accommodation, so small, the toilet bowl all marked, didnt have a shower on last morning as i couldnt face it.
On the plus side i had breakfast on the first morning and for 4 euros i found this to be a good price for what was on offer.
I have read a lot of the comments on this accommodation and i find it really strange where the 10/10 comes from, surely a 2/10 is fair.
The above might also explain why there is no discription of the facilities offered in the rooms.

The host and his father made the stay more personal, welcoming and inviting. They took a personal interest in their guests. They added greatly to my stay.
My room was clean and serviced daily.
The area was conveniently located for tourist services and needs- food, supermarket, sights, airport bus, etc.
Any limitations connected to the room related to this being an older building- smaller room, smaller bathroom, limited electrical plug-ins, no elevator- and could be expected in a character building such as this.
The biggest limitation for the area was its proximity to a road- carrying a moderate amount of traffic and pedestrians- which had no sidewalks or shoulder. Stepping out of the unit meant stepping directly onto the road. For an older person- such as me- it was the least enjoyable part of my day getting to/from the accommodation.
Obviously this was outside of the managements control.
It’s being renovated by new owner so not much to say, probably not the best time to stay here due to the noise. Housekeeping staff clean daily. No elevator.

Absolutely awful, the smell as you walk in is overwhelming, and so grubby, the bed and pillows completely worn out. Bedding and towels like sandpaper.
Breakfast was stopped mid week, so the 10/10 reviews are false. The owner was banging my door late at night to ask why I had given a bad review, it was that bad I came home after 3 days, I felt compromised and threatened for speaking the truth,
They even changed the WiFi password because I complained, I should have known when I had to wait for someone to let me in on arrival for 40 mins, even though I emailed them beforehand and told them of my arrival time.

Lovely welcome and breakfast. The rooms are clean and excellent value for the money. We would stay there again, Umberto is a great host who looks after his guests
Close to Old town with corner shops, restaurants and tour booking office. Walkable from major bus routes. Breakfast is decent, continental with option of cheese and ham or scrambled egg. Accommodation is in the original house or another building across the road. No aircon or central heating but we didn't miss that during the shoulder season.
I stayed for six nights - an older, solo traveler. I was greeted warmly by the owners, and I found all the staff members I had contact with to be friendly, helpful, and informative. I also found the other guests to be cheerful and interesting, no doubt an outgrowth of Pensao Mirasol's atmosphere, when we interacted in the dining area. I'll stay there again the next time I'm in Funchal.

The good: It’s an old facility but kept clean. Lots of restaurants nearby.
The not so good: While the old gentleman managing is nice and polite, his son can be very controlling and pushy. For my check the old man welcomed me and took down my info from my passport like any other facility and was shown my room. Later when I was leaving for lunch, the son wanted to “complete” my check in process by asking to pay the tourist tax. I made the payment and then he wanted to confirm my details of my passport again and basically read out loud in the reception all my details including the number, expiration etc. Now, this is a common sense that a passport contains sensitive information and privacy is huge; so what he did was simply ignorant and unacceptable. I disliked interacting with him overall- he was very controlling with his behavior, was really mean. I returned back that night around 10 pm, the building was dark and they keep all the lights off even at the reception. When I entered through the main door in the reception in the dark, I shut it and locked the door. The son comes out to the reception and turns on the light, telling me that I am loud. Mind you the building is right on the street and you can hear loud noise all the time. I told him I couldn’t see in the dark and he brushed it off and was mean again. Next few days I stayed quiet the whole time but noticed that he was mean with his comments while trying to “help” that I really didn’t ask for. Disliked my stay!
