This was a great place to stay, close to the arts centre of Christchurch and good clean rooms. Only issue was the cleaning of the bathrooms at 8am in the morning - a time when I think people would be using them. I think it would be better to do this after check out time.
HAKA House, great location for getting around the city, was super convenient with its automated check-in. Loved the bedside lights and plugs. Everything was clean, and the showers had great drainage. The hallways were a bit confusing, but still a great place to stay!"

Clean comfortable and central hostel in character building. Modern bunk beds
Friendly and helpful front of house staff. Unfortunately the twin room we had was extremely small and therefore awkward to navigate two suitcases and two people in. Only just enough room to walk around beds and thats it. There was a jug provided with cups but no tea or coffee or fridge. Had to fill jug from shared bathroom or communal kitchen. Room was very noisey due to doors continously opening and shutting with the shared bathroom right next door, which went on all night each of the 3 nights we were there. However location is great and walkable to city shops. Bus stop just down the road which was handy.
Nice relaxed hostel to stay at. Shower in shared bathroom could benefit from a bit of tlc around corners of shower base but overall very happy with the cleanliness, bedding & bunk areas great and well equipped and warm and secure.
They are really committed to the jail theme and there are a few fun activities you can do such as fingerprinting yourself or taking a mugshot. Also has various informative displays of the jail's history.
I stayed a couple of nights in a single room with a shared bathroom. It was simple, but clean and comfortable, and it had everything I needed for a short stay. I also liked that the shared bathrooms were single occupancy instead of having to share a bathroom with several other people using different stalls, as I've seen at other hostels. The location was convenient, and it was easily walkable to everything I needed.
Great hostel! Only thing is louldy bangig doors and music playing inside rooms from 9am until 10pm. Short walk away from Riverside and even shorter walk to botanical gardens and park.
Comfy big bed, nice ensuite, contemporary decor. Room well set up with plugs, lighting etc. Very comfortable overall. Other things for consideration,
No parking close by hostel, but available a couple of streets over apparently. Also, can be a bit noisy at night by front of hostel
Three nights in Christchurch at the beginning of our stay in New Zealand. Nice folks on staff. Kitchen was well appointed and everyone was great about sharing/cooperating. Met some lovely folks, and enjoyed it. We hade a twin room. which was small, but we made it work. Would certainly stay here again if back in Christchurch. Oh, and a number 8 bus stop very close by and other bus stops for other busses easily in walking distance. You are vey much downtown, so many of the things on our to do list were easily walkable...
Had a very comfortable and convenient 4 day stay in female 4 bed ensuit room. Everything was great. Only issue I had was the noise coming from closing of doors out of other rooms with bangs and loud noises in the middle of the night other than that I had a lovely stay. I would highly recommend it.
Firstly, I want to say how great the location is! It is walkable to lots of areas of CHCH.
I was situated in room 330/womans 4 bunk with ensuite, and unfortunately had the worst nights sleep I’ve had in a long time - not due to the other woman in my bunk, they were great! But due to the loud constant banging coming from the wooden hallway doors outside and the heat in the rooms. The rooms are not sound proofed at all and the old wooden doors are HEAVY so everytime someone used them (which was a lot) through the night they would BANG so loud it was like an earthquake in our room! I’m a heavy sleeper and this was waking me up every half hour at one point!
I contacted the after hours number to ask if there was anything that could be done (maybe get a door stop or even change rooms) as I had to be up at 5.30am - no answer to calls and no text back.
As well as not being soundproofed, the rooms aren’t fitted with any aircon or fans, and it was sooo hot!
I left early in the morning so didn’t see a staff member but also didn’t receive any communication back from the number I had been contacting overnight.

Good location near the Botanic gardens and town centre. Clean. Small kitchen though. Good lounge.
