  • The Basilica of the Holy Blood is a Roman Catholic minor basilica in Bruges, Belgium. Originally built in the 12th century as the chapel of the residence of the Count of Flanders, the church houses a venerated relic of the Holy Blood allegedly collected by Joseph of Arimathea and brought from the Holy Land by Thierry of Alsace, Count of Flanders. Built between 1134 and 1157, it was promoted to minor basilica in 1923. The 12th-century basilica is located in the Burg square and consists of a lower and upper chapel. The lower chapel dedicated to St. Basil the Great is a dark Romanesque structure that remains virtually unchanged. The venerated relic is in the upper chapel, which was rebuilt in the Gothic style during the 16th century and renovated multiple times during the 19th century in Gothic Revival style. Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, in the northwest of the country. The historic city centre is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO. Along with a few other canal-based northern cities, such as Amsterdam, it is sometimes referred to as The Venice of the North. Bruges has a significant economic importance thanks to its port and was once one of the world's chief commercial cities. We had an excellent stay in a lovely hotel. Its in a centre location yet far enough away from amny noise. The room wad clean and well presented. The bathroom was very large, the bedroom was very clean with a very comfortable bed. The breakfast wad delightful full very fresh with freshly made eggs anyway you like it.

The central location was perfect for walking & exploring Bruge. The room was very spacious & well attributed. Breakfast was very good, a wide variety of food options & eggs cooked to order. Parking was very limited but luckily available for us.

Excellent in every way!

We really couldn’t fault this lovely little hotel. The staff we so friendly and helpful, the accommodation lovely and the breakfast very good and plenty of choice. From the moment we arrived to the time we left the staff couldn’t have done more to help us. Every request we made was done with a very welcome smile. We will definitely be going back in the future and can definitely recommend the hotel.

My son and I stayed here for a city break in Bruges. We loved the location, the hotel is right in the centre, 1 minute from the square. We felt very safe walking back in the evening. The staff were very friendly and let us keep our bags in the hotel once we had checked out. The breakfast was great, lots of options and freshly cooked egg to your specifications. Lovely, spacious room, and the bathroom room had 2 sinks. The bath was very big. We will definitely come back!

The staff are very friendly, welcoming and helpful. The rooms are clean and spacious, and the hotel has plenty of character. The complimentary breakfast was always very well stocked and there was a surprising choice of cereals, breads, pastries and fruits. The location of the hotel is excellent - a stone's throw from the main square and walkable distance from most of the tourist attractions. We can't recommend Boterhuis Hotel highly enough :-)
