Discovered thousands of years ago, but popularized during the Russian imperial period, the mineral waters of Borjomi became renowned for their healing qualities. Russian figures such as Chekhov and Tchaikovsky visited Borjomi to relax in sanatoriums and drink the water. During the Soviet period, bottled Borjomi water became one of the Soviet Union's chief exports.
