Bang Khun Thian Guide

About Bang Khun Thian

Bang Khun Thian is a unique district of Bangkok, in that it is the southernmost neighbourhood of the city, and has access to the beach. It is also believed to be one of the oldest districts in Bangkok. Bang Khun Thian is famous for its shoreline, which is home to the city’s only beach, and despite being muddy, it is full of fascinating wildlife. In addition, shrimp farms and seafood restaurants are common in the district.

Don’t Miss

Bang Khun Thian is not a renowned tourist destination. Nevertheless, the district still contains a few interesting places that visitors will enjoy.

Even though swimming is allowed, the water in Bang Khun Thian is not overly inviting. Instead, visitors can explore the many shrimp farms within the area, or take a stroll through the traditional fishing villages that overlook the shoreline. This will give yet another interesting and unique culture to experience.

The wildlife of Bang Khun Thian is simply fascinating. In addition to plenty of bird species, there is a kind of monkey, known as a macaque, which inhabits the district. These macaques feed on sea crabs, so no feeding is necessary. Visitors will find plenty of photo opportunities as the monkeys are in abundance.

Several temples are located within the district. Even though these places of worship are not as renowned as those found in central Bangkok, they still provide a good place for visitors to sit and unwind while enjoying the unique Thai Buddhist culture. Wat Kamphaeng and Wat Kok are two of the most popular temples within this district.

Restaurants and Bars

There are many different styles of restaurants and many different menus located throughout Bang Khun Thian. Along most major roads, visitors will come across small areas where makeshift tables and chairs are set up. These little eating areas tend to offer local Thai delicacies, including dishes like ba mee egg-noodles and rice meals. However, the district is mostly renowned for its excellent range of seafood restaurants, which boast very fresh dining.

Shopping

The district of Bang Khun Thian has one of the largest shopping malls in Thailand, Central Plaza Rama II. This massive mall is home to plenty of entertainment as well as dining choices, and contains a vast range of retail stores, including those that feature clothing labels from Thailand and abroad.
