  • Ritipanna is the Sinhalese term for stilt fishing, which is a traditional method for fishing practiced by most fishermen along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. This art is popularly seen in areas such as Ahangama, Koggala, Welipenna, Kathaluwa and Thalarambe. A narrow pole is tied to a stick that is anchored on the sea bed. Fisher folk climb onto this stick and settle on the pole for a few hours in an effort to catch some fish. Fishermen found on stilts are those who do not have access to sophisticated equipment for fishing. These men can make a living simply with the help of two wooden poles to make a stilt. One pole is nailed onto the sea bed and the other is placed like a cross bar and acts as a plank for the fishermen to sit on. Each stilt can accommodate only one fisherman. For catching fish, they create a rod made of Kithul, and a small plastic bag is tied around their waist to hold the fish that they catch. With one hand they hold onto the stilt and with the other they hold the rod that catches fish. The tradition of stilt fishing will always be practiced by those who cannot afford to invest in modern fishing equipment. #likealocal

Wasn’t super lucky during my stay, first when I arrived I had to change hotel due my room was broken - had to pay more for that room. When I could come back I could stay two nights in my room then I had to switch room because another guest got my room. So in 7 days I stayed 2 nights in my booked room..

This area is good for surfing from October

I stayed there two nights with my family. Second day I invited my friends to stay over night & have a party together. It was unforgettable. This time sea was so rough so we could not enjoy with sea or have any beach parties. But from October sea is calm & I recommend any group of up to 15 can enjoy well.

Dirty and basic

No check in , bags dumped outside rooms and handed key. Rooms were dirty, shower rooms/ toilets not clean. One smelt really bad. Broken lock in balcony door. So bad we left. Can’t believe previous ratings were good? Currently seeking a refund.

Had a great time!

The staff was super friendly and helped us whenever they could! A big plus of this hotel is the sea front with direct access to a perfect beach. We didn't think direct access to the beach was that important for us but now we wouldn't want to go without it. The food was also great here including breakfast and dinner (the latter if you preorder). Some of the rooms are a little nicer and maybe cleaner than others, so I would recommend to pay a bit extra for a higher priced sea view room. Definitely recommended.
