About North Point
Sitting in the eastern part of Hong Kong Island, North Point has been inhabited since before the arrival of the British. It later became the location of a WWII camp and during the Chinese Civil War many wealthy Shangainese settled here. Today, the area is a mixture of luxury housing and public housing estates, as well as a transportation point between Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula.
Don’t MissNorth Point is rich in culture and history. It has both a large Fujianese population and Chinese population. Min Nan is spoken almost as much as Cantonese.
There are not a lot of things to see in North Point itself with the exception of Fortress Hill. This is a highly-developed area is home to office towers, private residential estates, and a few great hotels. The Harbour Grand Hotel Hong Kong and the iclub Fortress Hill Hotel are located here.
If you love spending time outdoors, leave North Point and head to the Quarry Bay Park or Victoria Park. You can also take a stroll along the waterfront. Gamblers will want to go to the famous Happy Valley racetrack and intellectuals should not miss a visit to the impressive Hong Kong Central Library.
Restaurants and BarsThere are plenty of places to eat in North Point, from small dim sum joints to award-winning restaurants. One of the best places in the area to dine is at the City Garden Hotel. The food court at Java Road Municipal Services Building offers some cheap meals. Food here is predominately Cantonese, though there are Indian, Singaporean, and Japanese restaurants around. North Point is not known as an area for nightlife, though there are a few local bars in the area as well as a few great hotel bars, like at the Ibis Hong Kong North Point and Harbour Plaza North Point.
ShoppingNorth Point is not a shopper’s paradise, but there is a great bazaar along Chun Yeung Street for bargain items. The Chinese Goods Centre Ltd is a great place for typical Chinese-style souvenirs, though prices are a little bit higher. Head to Dickson Fashion Square if you want to snatch up bargain designer labels like Miss Sixty and Alviero Martini.
