Phra Khanong Guide

About Phra Khanong

Made famous by the popular Thai horror legend, Phra Khanong is a downtown district of Bangkok, resting between Thong Lo and Asoke. The district is primarily residential, with numerous condominiums along Sukhumvit Road, and older Thai houses located towards the local khlongs. One of Bangkok’s largest and more modern shopping malls is found here. Phra Khanong is reachable via the BTS.

Don’t Miss

Phra Khanong is not renowned for its tourism attractions, but there are some local sights that are worth exploring.

There are numerous temples, known as wats, found within Phra Khanong. Wat Thammamongkhon is a very famous temple thanks to its uniquely tall chedi. In addition, this chedi is decorated using many kilogrammes of gold and over 1,000 diamonds. The temple, Wat Wachiratham Sathit, is part of Phra Khanong too, and even though it doesn’t have the aura of Wat Thammamonkhon, it still is very important for local Buddhists.

If tourists feel like staying more active, then they should visit Piyarom Sports Club. The complex is home to both outdoor and indoor activities, including badminton, tennis and swimming. The centre is quite large, so tourists will have no trouble finding an activity they will enjoy.

Visiting the shrine of Mae Nak Phra Khanong is highly recommended. It is actually located in the neighbouring district of Suan Luang. On any given day, the shrine is visited by many hundreds of people who come to make wishes and pay their respects to the local spirits.

Restaurants and Bars

Phra Khanong boasts plenty of excellent dining options, especially along and near Sukhumvit Road. There is a collection of great Japanese restaurants close to Sukhumvit Soi 26, all of which offer authentic cuisine. There are plenty of simple Thai restaurants located towards the Phra Khanong Canal area of the district. There aren’t many establishments in the district that cater for a social night out. However, just one stop south along the BTS is Thong Lo, which houses plenty of clubs, bars and small cafés that serve alcohol.

Shopping

The main shopping complex in Phra Khanong are Emporium Mall and EmQuartier. These major department stores are where tourists can find some of Bangkok’s finest clothing retailers and international brand names. Just next door to this district is the vibrant Khlong Toei Market. This is among Bangkok’s largest markets, offering a range of produce, from vegetables and fruit to live poultry.
