"Due to the proximity of this hotel to the current Ebola outbreak we gave advance notice of our need to cancel. Many hotels on Expedia will give 100% of your reservation back for a cancelation. Some have a more restrictive 50% refund policy. This was the only hotel in our travels that had an unfair and unreasonable cancellation policy. We even reached out to the staff but unfortunately they were very unresponsive. I recommend looking for hotels that are customer focused. This hotel is not."

"The property is lovely. Perched on the hillside, you feel like you’re on top of the world every day at breakfast with panoramic view of Lake Kivu. Our cabin was the closest to the lake which offered us unobstructed views from our patio which was the perfect spot to read or watch an incoming rain storm. It was a bit more of a hike uphill to breakfast and dinner but it was worth it. Plus we were also closer to the pool which was really one of the deciding factors why we picked Umutozo. You also have to take an outdoor shower while you’re there! Food was tasty and very fresh, we said hi to the on-site animals a couple of times. We enjoyed chatting with other guests and the owner Philippe at meal times. The staff was also great including Olivier who took us on our excursion to Napoleon Island and was very engaging to talk to on the boat ride there. I do recommend having a 4wd vehicle since there is a substantial amount of driving on unpaved roads required to reach the property. Very much enjoyed our time spent here."

What makes the stay even more special is the hospitality of the staff. They are genuinely kind, professional, and always available to assist with a smile. Add to that the tasty breakfast and fresh meals, and every day starts on a perfect note. This place is not just an apartment—it’s a retreat where you can relax in peace after exploring the city. In my opinion, Safe Haven Apartments sets a new standard for quality and comfort in Africa. It delivers an experience that is not only reliable but also feels truly special, making it a place I would return to without hesitation. "
