The I-5 corridor in northern California can be pretty bleak in the summer months, but you can still find an oasis here and there. This one is west of Redding, maybe about a half-hour off the Interstate. Drive west on highway 299, past Whiskytown Lake and look for a sign for Crystal Creek. This multi-tiered waterfall surrounded in green is just the thing! TRAVEL TIP: Have a long, overnight flight coming up? Check out the various travel pillows that let you lean forward and plant your face into them! A year after Whiskeytown, California was torched in the Carr Fire in July of 2018, the skeletal remains of trees still line the hills and valleys all the way to the lake’s edge. The area is hazy today as smoke from a fire in southern Oregon drifts down into Northern California.
