In 2007, Vaxjo was appointed Europe's greenest city by the BBC because of its environmental work and strive towards a sustainable future, remains a strong influence in the city.

The environmental focus shines through in every part of life in Vaxjo. Not only are the city's buildings set to meet rigorous environmental standards, you can also expect to find excellent restaurants in the city centre, where menus focus on local produce and organic farming. Visitors will find a city with plenty of lush greenery, practical and safe pedestrian routes as well as lots of bike trails leading through beautiful nature. There is also lots to discover for history buffs in and around Vaxjo.

Vaxjo sprung up from a natural location for a market place, by a lake, next to a big junction of several of southern Sweden's main routes. This is where the British missionary Sigfrid came to convert the Swedes in the beginning of the twelfth century. He is accredited with commissioning the first bishop's church in Sweden, which has turned into the marvellous Vaxjo Cathedral.

In Vaxjo nature is always around the corner. Go for a stroll around Vaxjo Lake to explore a 5 kilometre walking trail surrounded by sculptures, brooks and platforms with picturesque views of the city. Spend an afternoon in the park Strandbjorket, where the kids can discover an extensive playground, feed the ducks and recharge with waffles at the café, or admire plants and trees in Linnéparken.

If you want to learn more about the history of the area, you will have lots to discover. At The House of Emigrants visitors will find exhibitions about the mass emigration to America from south Sweden in the late 1800s. Just outside Vaxjo is the beautiful Kronoberg castle ruins, which was built more than 500 years ago and played a very important role in Swedish history, as a stronghold against the Danes.

Direct trains from all major cities in Sweden, as well as Copenhagen Airport, will make for a great and environmentally friendly start to your inspirational trip to Vaxjo.

"Huisje is netjes. Plekje camping zicht op meer leuk maar dicht op campers en caravans. Geen leuk plekje om buiten bij je huisje te zitten door auto van de buren. Servies erg weinig, bijvoorbeeld 4 messen voor 4 personen. Faciliteiten camping goed en netjes."
