If you want to get away from the hussle and bussle of Exeter this is the place for you and well worth the extra drive. The place is under new managemant and is undergoing a rolling refurbishment, but please don't let this put you off. An old collection of buildings and just a stones throw from the river Exe. I was made welcome by the new owners even as I was just stopping the one night.

Wonderful setting. We were the only guests and felt very welcomed by Sarah and her staff. Stayed in the Bridal Suite in the castle tower. Such a lovely room and nice view of the rest of the castle tower from the bedroom window. Beautiful grounds to walk around. A very special night away. Breakfast was continental but a huge choice and the local honey from Peggy's bees was so delicious and can be purchased on site. If you want to feel special and treat yourself this is the place to stay. Bottle of wine in room for us and tea and coffee, bottled water and biscuits. Only advise is take your own hairdryer.

On arrival was shown to room .The room looked ok until we realised that it had no wardrobe or hanging space the drawers in the chest of drawers were grubby so we ended up living out of suitcases. We were staying for a week. The room needed a deep clean dust everywhere. The breakfast was a joke no cooked breakfast and the so called continental breakfast was a cereal ,grapes blueberries, strawberries they put the same strawberries out for 3 days by day 4 they they were mouldy. The castle and grounds had seen better days .Sarah the owner was nice but she was trying to run the place virtually on her own.My advice look for somewhere to stay

Booked hotel - yet when I arrived at 6pm there were no staff - all doors locked - no guests and hotel appeared to be closed. Expedia relocated me to another hotel close by.

This is most certainly not a 4-star hotel, as Expedia suggests, and it certainly isn;t worth £100 per night. £50 would be overpriced! The rooms are tiny; the TV is about the size of an iPad and doesn't work anyway; there is no bar or restaurant, except for stale bread and mouldy fruit for breakfast; the towels were old and frayed at the ends. I could go on. The property has huge potential, but it doesn't appear that any maintenance has been carried out for years. I would recommend looking elsewhere, as you will most certainly be disappointed.

This is a magical place to stay. The remaining part of the castle, the gatehouse, is where our room was, and in fact we had use of a significant part of that building which is around 700 years old. We had a huge 4 poster bed which was very comfortable, and our own bathroom across the landing. We had access to the grounds which contain a chapel with 6th century origins. Some of the administration was not quite as perfect as we would have liked, but please persevere, as we did, and you will have a wonderful experience. A good continental breakfast was included. If you want to sleep in a genuine castle with a four poster bed, then you will struggle to find anywhere as good as this, and certainly not at this very reasonable price.

A lovely stay in the shadows of a castle

Our stay was lovely, relaxing and peaceful. The two rooms we booked were warm and spacious. The kids loved having access to the castle to walk around as well as the tennis courts. The owners were always happy to engage with our children and share their knowledge of the area.

The property is looking tired as well as the rooms. Fantastic surroundings though. Had no TV as the remote control was not available, the lady who booked me in had just had a loss in her family & was under a lot of pressure, so didn’t feel I could trouble her. Sorry to say I wouldn’t stay there again.
