About the Danshui District

The Danshui District in Taipei, Taiwan is a coastal town with rich, historical significance. It is a port city with activities focused along the harbour and riverside. The colonization by the Spanish, Dutch, and later Japanese has influenced the culture and lifestyle of the citizens in Danshui District. You can expect a blend of these different influences in their food, culture, and art when you visit the city of Danshui.

Don’t Miss

A favourite activity in Danshui District is to rent a bike and explore the city at leisure. Places of interest in Danshui include the Old Dutch fort of San Domingo—also known as Hongmao Castle. Another activity you might want to experience the brilliant sunset from the Tamsui River into the Taiwan Strait. You can visit the Lover’s Bridge. It looks like the mast of a sailing ship. The nearby amphitheatre is a great spot for musical plays and cultural shows.

Other tourist attractions in Danshui District are the Drop of Water Memorial Hall, the quirky Museum of Tamsui Fishiegoodies, the Teng Seng Fish Ball Museum, and Tamsui Old Street.

Restaurants and Bars

Since Danshui District is a port city, one can expect seafood and marine products to be the highlights. The Spanish, Dutch, and Japanese have also left their influences on the cuisine of Danshui. When visiting Danshui, there are several dishes you want to make sure that you try. The peculiar “Iron Egg” is a hardboiled egg stewed in spices and then air-dried—consider getting this dish at Grandma's Tiedan. Another dish is the A-Gei, or tofu stuffed with crystal noodles and marinated with fish paste then deep fried.

Danshui District is also famous for their firm and bouncy fish balls stuffed with meat and garlic served with a rich broth. Fish snacks are also popular and in all varieties of crisps or chewy dried fish sticks. You can find them in spicy and original flavours. You can find places to eat along the Tamsui Old Street or Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf. It has a good selection of seafood restaurants and cafes’.

Shopping

Danshui District is well-known for its handicraft and shopping for these items can be found in the Danshui Old Street and the waterfront area. There are many charming little shops in these areas with arcades, restaurants, and malls.
