Praia da Luz is a beautiful sandy beach located just 6 km away from Lagos in the Algarve, Portugal. It’s located in the picturesque village of Luz, known for its narrow roads lined with bougainvillea flowers.
The Praia da Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Luz (shortened to Praia da Luz) or Beach of the Church of our Lady of Light is Blue Flag beach, an award it won for water quality and sand cleanliness, making it an ideal and safe beach destination for those travelling with kids.
The beach is also a good spot for water sports such as scuba diving, snorkelling, water-skiing, windsurfing, sailing, paddleboats and boat trips. The curiously shaped Rocha Negra Cliff protects the bay from rough tides. The cliff is made of black volcanic rock formed millions of years ago as a result of the Monchique region's lava flow.
The rocks or cliffs on the west of the beach provide great opportunities for fishing. There are more than 200 varieties of fish found along this coastline, including mackerel and tuna out at the deeper areas.
This also makes for great local seafood restaurants, as well as fish markets in nearby Lagos. It’s no wonder that seafood is such a regional favourite. On the west side of the beach you’ll find a 16th Century fort that has found a new lease of life as a sophisticated restaurant, which offers patrons stunning views over the ocean. To find the beach’s full range of restaurants and bars, follow the cobbled promenade that runs along the seafront you’ll even find some gift shops for souvenirs.
Although this beach is very popular in the summer, there are some secluded areas of beachfront that can provide a more relaxed family beach experience – you just have to look.
