Petit Marche

Reunion featuring food

Don’t let the name fool you this little covered market packs an enormous range of fresh produce, flowers and handmade crafts into its collection of stalls.

The Petit Marché is a marketplace in the heart of Saint-Denis. Follow your nose around the stalls and take in the fresh aromas of tropical fruits, vegetables and flowers. Cheery red awnings provide shade and shelter while you peruse the wide variety of goods for sale. Pick up a healthy snack or some delicious items for your next picnic. Admire the skilled craftsmanship of the range of handmade and traditional items from the wider Indian Ocean area.

Turning into the entry of the Petit Marché, you’ll be greeted by the sights, sounds and smells of the lively market. Wander beneath the awnings and peruse the stalls. Tropical fruits are piled into pyramids and wicker baskets. Chat to the vendors about which fresh vegetables are in season. Try tamarinds, bringelles, jujubes and margozes. See the deep earthy hues of fragrant spices and take in the aroma of saffron, cardamom and ginger. Freshly caught seafood and meat products are also available. Check out the daily catch or inquire about the delicious charcuterie displays. Pick up ingredients for a home-cooked meal or try something new from the range of tasty produce.

Don’t miss exploring the craft market. You’ll find handmade pots, baskets and woven homewares. Many of these items are made locally or sourced from other regions in the Indian Ocean, such as Malagasy and Cormoros. Purchase souvenirs or a pretty basket for carrying your groceries. Your nose is sure to bring you to the range of freshly cut flowers, which include local tropical blooms and imported varieties.

The Petit Marché is situated one block behind the waterfront boulevard in central Saint-Denis. Visit the market any day of the week until the evening, except for Sundays when it closes at midday. The market is easy to reach from elsewhere in downtown Saint-Denis on foot. The city’s bus terminal is a 5-minute walk away. It is an easy 15-minute drive to the market from Roland Garros Airport in nearby Sainte-Marie.
