"We had a lovely one night stay at Ferncliff, it was just lovely and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend as a very well run ‘b&b’ type hotel but much more luxurious. Bernard in particular was fantastic, especially his cooking — we had both dinner and breakfast there. Very glad we chose this over the ‘grand hotel’ in the end. "

"A very nice property although a bit run down, need of update including furnitures, we arrived late in the evening and found it very cold room we had to turn electric fire on and left it on right through the night, the food is average, no local shops near by, so you will need tuk tuk, staff are great, friendly and very helpful. "The building looks lovely and the grounds are beautiful BUT the room wasn’t great , the bathroom had an old shower curtain and the shower was above the bath. The bed was uncomfortable and the room was small and dark. it was my birthday and there was no mention of this even though my husband had given advanced information. The buffet and dining room looked spectacular but the food quality wasn’t what we were expecting given the visual wow factor. My least favourite hotel whilst staying in Sri Lanka. "

A beautiful train journey through the rolling hills of Sri Lanka's enormous tea plantations. I took this train ride from Nuwara Eliya to Ella which took about 3 hours, and less than 300 rupees- third class is worth the mild discomfort for the people you meet. And Ella is definitely worth a trip- stunning views and hikes up to Ella Rock and Little Adams Peak.
