Killin Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Falls of Dochart showing a bridge, a river or creek and heritage elements
Venture through hilly highlands on a mountain bike and ski from snowcapped peaks looming over this quaint village known for waterfalls.

A rugged, hilly terrain offers a spectacular backdrop to the charming village of Killin on Loch Tay’s western flank. The surrounding trails and waterways make the area an attractive base for exploration. It was the home of the notorious MacNab Clan, who played a role in the Jacobite Risings. Bring a picnic to eat while enjoying excellent views from one of the many hilly peaks.

Walk alongside the River Dochart in the village and appreciate the calm ambiance. Encounter the Falls of Dochart as you cross the bridge passing over the waterfall. The cascades attract visitors from across the country for their natural beauty and intriguing history.

Learn about the MacNab Clan at the burial ground on the island of Inchbuie beside the falls. Inspect the eerie monuments, including a shrine to a medieval warrior and two 18th-century busts. Nearby is the Killin Water Mill, a three-story building from 1840. Inside the mill, peruse the arts and crafts shop for intriguing trinkets.

Many activities centre on Loch Tay, which is more than 14 miles (23 kilometres) long. Rent boats and equipment from the Killin Outdoor Centre and Mountain Shop. Fish for salmon or paddle a kayak on the loch. Mountain bikes are also available. Cycle the lake’s perimeter to see it from varying angles.

Drive south for about 20 minutes to reach Loch Earn, where watersports activities are popular. Discover the fascinating ruins and the modern parish institution of  Balquhidder Church. See the grave of Rob Roy MacGregor, one of Scotland’s most infamous outlaws.

July is the hottest month and April is the driest. Note that locals speak English, while Gaelic is dying out.

Surrounded by mountains and lakes, Killin is in Stirling in central Scotland. Nearby towns include Balquhidder and Crieff. Drive south for 90 minutes to reach Glasgow or southeast for an hour and 40 minutes to reach Edinburgh.

Killin is a rural retreat unspoiled by modernity, where you can enjoy sounds of wildlife and running water.

"Very enjoyable stay in this quirky and atmospheric inn. Could have done with an a la carte menu to expand choices but food quality good. Stand out service is what made our stay. Very popular and busy place with booking for dinner essential. Falls always spectacular."

"The property was in a lovely location and handy for local amenities! Very quiet and lovely to sit outside and listen to the bagpipes on a morning! The only down side was the drive down to the property and the potholes if they were filled in it would have been a much easier drive in and out."

The Courie Inn is a great place for a meal and there's a kooky wee thrift shop at the Old Mill behind the falls.

We came to Killin for the music festival which. as always, had a great atmosphere and was well run and boasted many great musically performances. Great places to eat and drink and lots of hills and countryside for walks.
