The Joseph Smith Memorial Building is a magnet for visitors of Temple Square. It’s a popular location for lunch or dinner after exploring the other buildings of the Mormon Church on the square. Start the day here with breakfast in the café or pastries from the bakery. This building also houses the FamilySearch Centre, where you can trace your family’s ancestors and legacy.
This Italian Renaissance-style building was erected in 1911 as the Utah Hotel. The inn operated for almost 80 years. A 1993 renovation transformed the interior. The purpose as well as the name were also changed to honour Joseph Smith Junior, who founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Today, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building is a popular venue for weddings, conferences and fine dining.
Admire the lobby’s intricate glass ceiling, huge marble pillars and opulent staircase. Look up at crystal chandeliers and stand on thick plush carpets. Visit the on-site bakery for a home-style meal or baked treats. A café on the ground level sells sandwiches and snacks, as well as gifts and souvenirs.
The FamilySearch Centre is on the fourth floor. Volunteers here help visitors piece together their family trees. This is a key activity for members of the Mormon Church, although anyone can use this resource.
Take your pick from two restaurants on the 10th floor for lunch or dinner. The Garden Restaurant offers panoramic views of Salt Lake Temple and surrounding Temple Square and has a retractable glass ceiling, which opens in the warmer months. The Roof Restaurant is best for families and features an all-you-can-eat gourmet buffet.
The Joseph Smith Memorial Building is located directly east of Salt Lake Temple. Parking is available for patrons of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, which is closed on Sundays.
