Make use of the many fun facilities in this large park, from a theatre and a marina to paddle boats and an ice-skating rink.

The Platte River meanders through the dense, verdant vegetation of Eugene T. Mahoney State Park, a vast set of scenic grounds with an impressive array of facilities and activities. It has an aquatic center, a marina and an observation tower, among other features. Traverse the myriad trails winding through the forests for an insight into the local plants and animals.

Take a break with snacks and refreshments at one of the many designated picnic areas scattered around the park. Ride horseback along the hiking trails and go fishing on the river. You can also rent paddle boats to take out on the water.

Snap photos of the boats in the Owen Marina on Baright Lake and embark on a pleasant stroll along the perimeter of Qwest Lake, which has a fish-cleaning station on its western bank. See what others have caught or try fishing yourself. Buy a one-day fishing permit and borrow gear from the marina.

Bring the kids to the Mahoney State Park Ice Skating Rink on the western side of the grounds. It is open from mid-November through mid-March. Play a round of mini-golf with your children and browse the items for sale in the gift shop. There's also a water park with a wave pool, an arts-and-crafts area and a driving range.

Attend a melodrama (a play with musical and orchestral sections) at the Kountze Theater, which is open year-round. Stay overnight at the Lakeside Campground or the Little Creek Campground. You can also rent a room in the Peter Kiewit Lodge, a little farther north in the park. The park has a daily entrance fee. Some activities may have additional charges.

Find Eugene T. Mahoney State Park in the southwestern outskirts of Omaha. Drive southwest for 25 miles (40 kilometers) to get here in about 30 minutes. Visit other nearby landmarks such as Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park and Wildlife Safari, Platte River State Park and Quarry Oaks Golf Club.
