Wherever you're jetting in from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you're well organised. We've put together a list of handy tips and tricks that will help get your Compostela holiday started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• The secret to having an amazing flight experience is to pack ahead. Start with the essentials: passport, travel docs, credit cards and medications. Next, take on board items that'll help while away those hours, like some electronic devices or a good read. It's also a wise idea to bring your chargers, a comfy neck pillow and a pair of earphones. And of course, be sure to chuck in toiletry items like a toothbrush, deodorant and a clean set of clothes.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Check carefully that you don't have a sharp object hiding in the bottom of your hand luggage. Other banned items include flammable or explosive goods, such as aerosol cans and bleach, and gels and liquids in containers with a volume of more than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of a plane are no place for a fashion parade. Layer your clothing and opt for shoes that are flat and easy to pull on and off.
• Most travellers have heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of sitting. To reduce your risk on board, drink lots of water, consider wearing compression socks and move your lower limbs often.

Being organised before you arrive at the airport will make your getaway to Compostela easy and painless. Here are some top tips for a speedy journey through security:

• Keep your boarding pass and ID at hand. They're the first items you'll be asked for by security.
• Your belt, coat, keys and other small items, like coins, will need to go on a tray through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them as your turn draws near.
• For just a few moments, you'll have to unplug from technology. Your tablet, phone and any other electronic gadgets also need to go through the scanner.
• Any gels or liquids, such as perfume or toothpaste, that you want to bring on board must be no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one litre), clear zip-lock bag.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you several valuable minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Lightweight sneakers are usually not.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them safely away in your checked baggage. They won't be allowed on board and will be confiscated.
