Downtown Krabi Travel Guide
This small southern Thailand city is typically Thai, offering visitors a truly authentic experience. Downtown Krabi – or Krabi Town - sits at the mouth of the Krabi River where it spills into Phang Nga Bay, and is a melting pot of different Thai cultures. Krabi has a history that dates back to the late 18th century and is named for the monkey symbolism of old. It is easy to zip around Downtown Krabi by songthaew (local bus), motorbike taxi, taxi or even hire car, though many visitors also choose to get around on foot.
Don’t MissMost visitors only use Downtown Krabi as a stopover point before accessing the beaches or nearby islands, but there are quite a lot of sights that make it worthwhile staying for a few nights.
For the historic and cultural character of Downtown Krabi visit; Kaew Govararam Temple, the famous Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave temple) and Klong Thom Temple.
If you love to be surrounded by stunning scenery then don’t miss the Khao Kanab Nam, which is a symbol of the province. These limestone karsts are accessible by taking a longtail boat up the river from the Chao Fah Park Pier. The waterfront parks along the river are scenic and a great place to get some fresh air or to get a coffee or a beer. You can enjoy lunch at one of the riverside hotel’s restaurants.
Restaurants and BarsEating can be quite satisfying in Krabi, especially if you are looking for a cheap local meal. The night market next to the pier is a great place to start, with food carts selling southern Thai specialities. The market on Maharat Soi 10 is even better, and there are some good restaurants around the Vogue shopping complex. Drinking in Downtown Krabi is inexpensive, especially if you buy a beer at one of the markets or at 7-11. There are also a few bars that cater to tourists and expats on Chao Fa Alley.
ShoppingKrabi is not known for its shopping, although it’s a cheap place to shop for souvenirs, clothing and decorative items to bring home with you. The Krabi Town walking street that takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night behind the Vogue shopping complex is where the best bargains can be found, while the mall itself is a good place to shop in the daytime.
