• The secret to having an amazing flight experience is to pack in advance. Start with the essentials: passport, official ID, bank cards and vital medications. Next, take on board items that'll help keep you busy, like some electronic gadgets or a juicy novel. It's also smart to pack your chargers, a neck pillow and a pair of earplugs. • Most travellers are aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To lower your risk on board, drink lots of water, consider wearing compression tights or socks and do gentle foot and leg exercises in your seat.

• Your passport and travel documents will need to be presented to airport security personnel. Have them close by to avoid fumbling around for them.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Empty your pockets and remove anything metal that is likely to set off the scanner's alarm. This includes items like headphones or earphones, as well as your coat or jacket. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• All electronic devices, including your phone and tablet, must also be scanned.
• Any gels or liquids, such as lip balm or cologne, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres). They must also all fit inside a quart-size (one litre), zip-lock bag.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several minutes. Boots and bulky shoes are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Lightweight sneakers are usually not.
