2. La Promenade du Peyrou

The Arc de Triomphe and an equestrian statue of Louis XIV provide a regal charm to the scenic 18th-century Place du Peyrou. The park is known for its aqueduct and neoclassical water tower, whose summit offers panoramic views of Montpellier’s historic center. Wander along the tree-lined esplanade at the park’s core and admire the various statues and gardens.

3. Opera National Orchestra of Montpellier

Enjoy an evening of opera, ballet or classical music at Opéra Comédie, the late 19th-century opera house on the Place de la Comédie. The beautiful theater with its grand frontage is the principal venue of the Opéra National de Montpellier Languedoc-Roussillon, an opera company formed in 1755.

4. Fabre Museum

5. Montpellier Cathedral

Montpellier Cathedral is a large 14th-century Gothic church in the center of the old city. With its towers, turrets and ramparts, the building resembles a medieval fortress. Its full name is Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Montpellier and it became a cathedral in 1536. The structure was heavily damaged in the Wars of Religion and rebuilt in the 17th century. It is the only church in Montpellier’s historic area to have survived the war.

6. Jardin des plantes de Montpellier

The Jardin des Plantes de Montpellier is an area of stunning natural beauty, covering 11 acres (4.5 hectares) near the center of the city. The attractive park was founded in 1593 and is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe. It encompasses more than 2,500 plants species, ponds, an arboretum and landscaped areas. The site is owned by University of Montpellier I and is also used for study and research.
