Make a visit to this historic northern California town to discover beautiful countryside and an intriguing past.

The Susanville region is a convenient starting point for people exploring the many natural attractions around the area. Visit the town itself for pleasant riverside walks, hearty dining and a welcoming atmosphere.

Stroll through Memorial Park and head toward Roop’s Fort just east of the city centre. This pretty wood cabin was used as a trading post along Noble’s Emigrant Trail, an important frontier route across California. Constructed during the middle of the 19th century, the fort takes its name from Isaac Roop who founded the town.

Nearby on Weatherlow Street, Lassen Historical Museum offers additional insight into the region’s past. Look through more than 160 years of rare photos, clothing and memorabilia that chart the town’s history from its founding through the thrilling years of the gold rush and beyond.

You’ll find the best places to eat along Main Street. Try a delicious fish fry or indulge yourself with a juicy steak sandwich.

As easy as it would be to enjoy several hours relaxing in the sun and people-watching, be sure to explore some of the lush countryside just outside of town. Miles of paths perfect for hiking and cycling are accessible from across the city. Rent bikes from the visitor centre.

A superb route is the Bizz Johnson Trail that winds west through lush forest toward Westwood. Following an old railway route, the trail is mostly flat, crossing the river several times and taking you past a stunning canyon. Attend the Rails to Trails Festival at the old Susanville depot on the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend, with live music and a range of family activities.

Susanville is in eastern California 35 miles (56 kilometres) east of Lake Almanor and 86 miles (140 kilometres) northwest of Reno. Find a selection of guesthouses and motels along Main Street, along with cafés and restaurants.

However long you are planning on staying, find plenty to keep you busy both inside and out in.
