Sandbridge Beach

Sandbridge Beach featuring a sandy beach as well as a couple
Escape to this quiet, family-friendly beach to enjoy fishing, strolling, dining on fresh seafood or simply relaxing on the sand.

Sandbridge Beach is a serene, golden-sand beach just south of busy Virginia Beach. A secluded alternative to its popular neighbor, Sandbridge Beach is an ideal place to get away from the crowds. Kayak or hike in nearby Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, dine on fresh seafood and spend an evening stargazing.

Running for 5 miles (8 kilometers) along the Atlantic Ocean, Sandbridge Beach is a beautiful stretch of sand covered with dunes and sea oats. With a more relaxed atmosphere than Virginia Beach, Sandbridge exudes a remote, island-like ambiance. Surf, swim, read a book or build a sandcastle.

Venture to the Sandbridge Pier, also known as the Little Island Fishing Pier, a favorite fishing spot for locals and visitors. Catch flounder, mackerel, bluefish and cobia, among dozens of other species. Play a game of tennis on one of Little Island Park’s two public courts and let the kids burn off some energy on the playground.

When you’re ready for a meal, head to one of the excellent restaurants near the beach. Many offer fresh seafood you can enjoy on decks with lovely views of the ocean. Linger after dinner for live entertainment or buy an ice cream to eat as you go for an evening stroll along the beach. Visit bustling Virginia Beach for more lively nightlife options.

Ride the tram to the marshes and open waters of nearby Back Bay National Wildlife Park. This freshwater refuge, encompassing more than 9,250 acres (3,740 hectares), borders the Atlantic Ocean on the east and Back Bay on the west. Look for snow geese and a number of different migratory ducks in fall. Go for a leisurely hike as you try to spot threatened and endangered species, including peregrine falcons and bald eagles. For something a little more active, try kayaking or cycling in the park.

Sandbridge Beach is located 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of the main Virginia Beach resort area. Drivers will find several parking lots within walking distance of the beach, all of which charge fees seasonally. Enjoy your visit to this tranquil stretch of sandy coastline.
